Help with RO/DI...

I have no idea what I am doing. I am thinking about a unit like this and will be getting a 50 gallon drum for it to fill up. Okay, so the questions are, will I need a pressure gauge? Do RO/DI units come with a on/off "switch" so when the drum is full it will turn off? What is involved in setting these things up? I know these questions with vary with each unit, I am just asking in general. Also is the unit in the link a good unit?

TIA

I shy away from certain ebay purchases. I purchased my 5 stage ro/di from one of our sponsors and am very happy with it. They are very easy to install, but I don't have a holding tank set up on mine so I can not help you with that. The customer service is awesome and the quality is good. I would browse our sponsors before commiting to purchase one from ebay. JMO

Edit: misspelling~~

I was trying to stay away from spending $300 on a ro/di unit. Alot of home improvement projects has put a big dent in the budget. Okay, how about this one

That is the unit I have. I just started using it recently. Mine did NOT come with an auto-shut off (I did not ask for one) that you will need if you're planning on using a holding tank so make sure to ask about that.

When we bought our RO/DI filter, we checked into units that use a 75 GPD membrane and a 100 GPD membrane. At the time I was seeing that the 75 GPD membranes was producing better quality water (lower TDS). Unless the technique has changed in the way the membranes are made, I assume that the same still holds true.

Unless you have a really large tank, I think that a 75 GPD unit would be more than enough. I noticed that 75 GPD units are harder to find these days, but it might be worth looking into.

I get zero TDS using the 100 gpd membrane...and my output is about 2-2.5 gal per hour (48 - 60 gpd) due to the incoming cold water (membrane rejects more water when it's cold). I was told you can replace the 100 gpd membrane with a 75 or even 50 gpd or vise-versa.

How tough is the installation on this unit from inreef? Is this just plug and play, or is there drilling of pipes involved?

My husband 'hard plumbed' it into out pipes but the unit comes with 'vampire clamps' that install really easily. It looks complicated at first, but it isn't.

Why do you need a shut off valve . . . . . one day your going to forget to shut it off and you'll have a flood. For every gallon of RO you produce you'll be throwing 10 gallons of waste (at least) down the drain. So you will NEED to install an waste outlet with your RO unit anyway. Why not just just drill a whole in the top of your 50gallon bucket and overflow it into your waste. That is what I have done (see PIC). If your on a water meter or are consious about wasting water then install a shut off as well

What do you do with the extra water?
