fairly new to salt water aquariums and don't know if calcium, alkalinity, ph and other things are of any if not great importance to my fish only tank with some live rock thanks troy

I would have to say yes, it's pretty important.

For a fish only I would be mostly concerned with pH and salinity. Oh, and of course ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.
Calcium and alkalinity not that important for a FO.

Yep, you can forget about Calcium. Your main concerns should be . . . . . and I'll try and add some importance to the order is . . . . temp, salinity, alk, ph. In the nitrogen cycle the order should be amonia 0, nitrites 0 and nitrates as low as possible. Those are the main things that effect the health and stress levels on your fish, after that you may want to monitor phosphates (to stop algae growth), calcium (to encourage calcerous algae)
