Opinions on Zoas

I know we all have different tastes, but there are so many different things I have grown to like AND have gotten some great ideas just by looking at pictures of all the sweet pieces everyone has in their tanks.

My most recent fascination has been with zoanthids. You can get a really nice punch of color with those babies! Im looking into getting a piece or two and also looking into getting some frags.

Which do you all prefer - a rock filled with one type of zoa? Or maybe a rock thats half one zoa and the other half a different one? A mixed platter with various colors?

Do tell and by all means share some pics! Want some ideas so I know what to do with my frags!

I will tell you right off, be wary of wild caught zoanthids. I prefer to pick and choose from colonies that have been in captivity for quite some time (I learned this the hard way). Luckily, many of the online dealers that specialize in zoanthids propagate their own from mother colonies...

I prefer small frags, perhaps 1-2 square inches in area. I would almost use my tank as a "pallet" and figure out what color morphs would look best in combination with other color morphs. Getting mixed rocks are great as well, but usually they are too big and too expensive for my taste. In other words, I don't want to have to rearrange my aquascaping because I have a very large zoanthid rock.

Take er easy

So what would u do? get some frags and glue it onto an existing piece of live rock and let it ultimately grow over the entire rock? Or attach the frag to a smaller piece of rock rubble?

I have done both and have no preference. It is all a matter of where I want the frag to go and what resources I have to get the frag there (do I have epoxy to attach a rock, can I wedge in a rock, should I just glue it, etc...). In my opinion though, the most succesful zoanthid frags are ones that use zero super glue. You have almost zero polyp losses when you can just slice away a piece of encrusted rubble that is next to a mother colony.

I prefer a solid color zoa to a mixed colony of colors. I usually either peel off zoas from the bottom glass or just cut the polyps off of an existing rock and super glue them right onto a rubble rock. Most of mine now are all aquacultured so they recover VERY quickly and I have no losses.

Hey Doni.

I notice on the bottom of the tank...off center a little to the right, looks liek oyu have red zoos on the bottom of the tank....out of curiosity, about how big is that piece?

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Those are my deep orange zoas...the reds are on the bottom far left behind a xenia frag. The orange colony is about 2.5-3 inches.
