Zoanthids

Few questions about these things...

First of all....is it zoos or zoas? And either way, Id like Travis, Mike and Brucey to pronounce it for me.

Second - does placement matter? For example, do they need high light at the top or can be placed anywhere? Should the piece be placed onto a piece of live rock or can they be on the sandbed?

Last - Ive read these things spread. One colony I have hasnt spread to another rock but the "stalk " part of the polyps have grown extended making the piece look fuller....is this what you guys mean? OR does the colony actually divide and you get more polyps?

Thanks

Alan

I've done my best to get in the habit of saying "Zo" as in not "Zoo."

Placement does matter to an extent, unfortunately, it varied a lot by the specific specimen IME. If they're unhappy, they'll tell you. Start with moderate lighting and flow and see what works for you.

They most certainly can be on the sandbed, assuming they're already attached to rock.

As far as spreading, they will actually dicide and get more polyps. I think the longer you leave them in one spot, the better chance you have of getting good growth from them.

There are a lot worse things you could have said... lots of people make that mistake. I still do, I just try to be conscious of it.

And in the end, scientists be damned, if the other person knows what we're talking about, we have successfully communicated.

The coral reef and reef fish biologists at UNCW both mispronounce acropora and montipora (so do I for that matter). It really doesn't matter as long as the other person knows what you are talking about.
IME with zoos they are pretty dormant when you first add tehm to the tank. Then about 3 or 4 months later they begin to spread. Some slowly, some fast. You can try to target feed them with some cyclopeze or crushed flake food to encourage them to spread. Be very sparing on the target feeding though.
