Anemone spawn?

I caught my RBT anemones smoking yesterday

First one was 'smoking'...then the second began to 'smoke'. I don't know if they were spawning or not. They both release the same looking 'smoke' from the tips of a few tenticles. It fogged up the water a bit but not too bad. I have had them over a year now and neither have ever split.

It was really difficult to capture the 'smoke' in a photo.

Doni I thought that BTA's reproduced asexually and didn't spawn.
I found this interesting:

A polyp can divide longitudinally, resulting in two, somewhat smaller individuals, probably within the space of a few days. Each then grows to an appropriate size, divides, and so on. In this species, each polyp is relatively small, but clonemates remain next to one another so their tentacles are confluent, and the associated anemonefish apparently regard them as a single large anemone.

Several other species of actinians also have two different reproductive modes: small animals that clone and large ones that do not. This appears true of Heteractis magnifica, too. In the center of its range (i.e. in eastern Indonesia, on the Great Barrier Reef, in New Guinea), it occurs as single, large individuals. To the east and west (i.e. in western Indonesia and Malaysia, and in Tahiti), several to very many small individuals of identical colouration are typically clustered together, appearing to be a single large (or huge!) anemone. Based on their shared colour and their proximity, we infer that they are clonemates.

I always thought they spawned via their mouths...these were 'smoking' from their tenticles..... I really don't know exactly what they were doing but here is a great article from Advanced Aquarist regarding anemone reporduction: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...02/feature.htm

I have seen both, same thing for "egg" releases, corals and anemones

Doni, did it turn your entire tank cloudy? Or just a localized area around the anemone? Just trying to compare...

I think the vet school's large BTA spawned last week. One of the caretakers put some topoff water in the tank, and I get a call a few hours later to find a tank that was completely cloudy. I at first thought it was a toxin mixed into our topoff water. However, I didn't see any evidence of that, and all inhabitants (except the BTA) showed no signs of stress. The only thing I could pin it on was a spawning event.

The good new, 2 pounds of carbon and a large water change quickly corrected the situation. For a few minutes, I thought we might have lost the tank...
