Temperature regulated timer

I would like to put my 2 sump fans on some sort of temperature regulator so they are not on 24/7 but instead, only when the tank temp or ambient room temp rises. Either water temp or air temp would work? Does anyone have such a set up? If so, how do you have it hooked up and what type of hardware are you using? Pictures would be helpful.

Woody,

don't know if such a thing exists. Probably it does. I have my fans on a timer via a
3 in one adapter on my timer. i set the fans to come on a little before my lights and off a little after the lights go out. Simple and inexpensive $10.00 for the timer and $2
for the adapter. I have a sump fan, and a rotating canopy fan on the same timer.

Works good. My temp stays between 72 and 75 ---- in the mid summer i crank the a.c. but can keep my 125 under 81 with this set up. I am running 6 96watt p.c. and have a mag 12 and my skimmer pump both in my sump heating things up a bit!

Doni, PM mattie, I think he has the exact thing you are looking for. If I remember correctly, he got it in a computer parts catalogue or something similar. I could be way off base, but worth a shot...

Take er easy

maybe something like this ... http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...129-033&DEPA=0

Except that now you need a 12vDC power source.
Probably easier to use 120vAC (house power) and the timer idea.

my fans are temp senstive there 12v but they run all the time there is voltage...
so when the MH turns on the fans do too and the fans speed up as the light gets hot so it keeps the temp under the canopy cool. but they do not turn off when the temp is cool enough....

i have a 12v ac dc converter from radio shack 8.99? hard wired to my timer with the mh ballast if you really wanted it to turn off i think you could wire in a old style coil home thermastate to make the fans turn on and off.
but what i am planning to do next time cause i am building a 75 with the2 250's is to run the temp sensitive fans but ones that are less noisy than mine becouse i have done some experimenting with differnet brands of 80mm fans and they are not all the same for cubic feet per minute or noise DB levels

I know the IKS computer can do it =), but I think thats a bit extravagant to just turn two fans on and off with the temp =). You can do all kinds of good stuff with that beast!

You can use a computer fan controller to make one. I plan on building one in a few months. You just have to get one that has a temp probe, then you seal it(i.e. sillicon) and place it in the water. Then you use the leads that would go to the fans to connect to relays or directly to the fan, depending on how much power it takes. It can also controll heaters and, with a big enough relay, you lights incase things get really cooking.

Probably will run you about 60 including relays and power inverters, more if you get the really fancy models.

Great input guys. Wow.. the electronic equipment that is available....whew~~

I am trying out this set up: Small sump fan that is on the same timer as the actinics and a larger sump fan that is on the same timer as the MH. I have a ebo-jager as a back up incase the temp falls too low. So far, it's working really well!!

Thanks again for the comments!
