Blue Mandarin Goby

I saw these gobies at the lfs....very nice color. I also like that they are bottom dwellers....sometimes u need some color down there.

Anyway, how difficult are these fish to take care of? Also are u limited to one or is it ok to have 2?

I had a big 'fat' one in a 120g mature tank (with 30g fuge). Low maintenace as long as they are housed in a moderate size established tank with a VERY-VERY large pod population.

They generally do not eat anything but live pods. It will take a well matured tank with lots of rocks and/or a large refugium to supply the food it will need. Very pretty fish though! I had a green one but did not have enough pods in my 90 gal to sustain it; so i took it back to the LFS when it started loosing weight

I would rate them as expert fish due to their dietary requirements as described above. What is your tank size Alan?

Adding your set-up information to your signature would be most helpful!

I only have a 46 gallon.....at the beginning I used to notice that live pods crawling up the side of the glass....lots of them....but the last few months I never see them...where did they all go?

So I guess that goby is a no go for me?

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

The rule of thumb is 100 gallons minimum with lots of pods to ensure they don't starve.

i had 1 in a 46 and he did fine but he also would eat frozen brine shrimp also, this is pretty rare. now i have him housed in a 90. ive had him for well over a year probably closing in on 2 years i also had a seperate fuge in my 46 that was always loaded with pods. looking back knowing what i know now i would not have purchesed the fish i just happened to luck out. they are a very beautiful fish and have great personalities

I always look at them when we go to the LFS and wish I felt sure enough to get one but, until we can get a larger tank with a fuge I just don't feel comfortable enough that we could sustain it right now.

Aj,
If you can find one eating something besides live brine, they will adapt just fine to captivity. Typically tho these fish starve to death in captive systmes since they dont have enough live food population ot forage on.

Most likely yes. I have seen some people transition them to formula one and two small pellets. Make sure you get the small when shopping, the medium is too large.

The goal in this hobby is to recreate a system that will allow fish and other livestock thrive and not just survive. Big difference in those two terms.
