| Torch coral | Do I have a Nitrate problem? I can't seem to get my Nitrates lower than 25 ppm. I do a 10% (5 gal.) water change every other week using RO/DI water and IO salt. I tested my RO/DI water and The nitrate level is very low, like 2 ppm. My parameters are: pH: 8.1 Temp.: 79 deg. F Ca: 430 Alk: 8.48 dKH (3.03 meq/L) SG: 1.027 Mg: 1245 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 0.1 ppm Nitrate: 25 ppm Until recently when I got the anthias, I was feeding once a day, every other day . I typically feed either Cyclopeze, flake food, live brine or my homemade mush. My photo period is: 12:00 pm Actinic on 12:30 pm 50/50 (10k/Actinic) on 8:30 pm 50/50 (10k/Actinic) off 9:00 pm Actinic off/Moonlight on 4:00 am Moonlight off I use an AquaClear 300 HOB Filter. In the filter I use the foam insert and a bag of Chemi-Pure. Do I have a nitrate problem? If so, can anyone suggest what to do to lower them? If you need any other info about my setup, please let me know.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | 25ppm isn't too bad... but I would keep it under 15 ppm. Mine is between zero - 5ppm. Add more rock, blow your rocks daily, clean your skimmer pump, reduce feedings, vacuum the substrate (if you have any), clean your sump (if you have one), and do 20% water changes weekly until it drops.

| Limpet | Setting up a small inline refuguim with macro algea will eat the nitrates down to nothing in no time. Not to mention the benefits of live pods and shrimp it will add to your system. My nitrates are undetectable in both systems with the use of my DIY ecosystems and a good skimmer.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | ....i just calculated that you have approx 26" of fish in your 50 gallon tank... yikes! A bit overcrowded. You may want to reduce the bioload.

| Scopas Tang ![]() | IMHO, I think you have too many fish for a 50, which may be producing too much waste (in addition to the snails and hermits). You may need a more efficient skimmer...CC=counter current? aren't those the ones that utilize an air stone? Sorry if I'm wrong. Also, again IMHO, I think that 10% water changes every two weeks is not efficient at reducing/diluting the waste. These may be simple things for you to look at and remedy if you choose. I would also consider checking with another test kit, and consider adding a refugium (not neccessarily in that order )HTH.-RY
