Rainsford Goby Experts

Yesterday I introduced a juvenile Raisford Goby to my tank. It is between 1/2" and 3/4:" in length and is not as big around as a pencil. It spends its time hunting/picking the sand bed and then disappearing into the aquascaping.

Who can shed more light on these way cool fish? Best thing is it was $14.99 at the LFS!

sand sifter/hunter,,they are shy fish,,,and will spook easily. need a mature tank.

Hair algae eater too!I had 2 of these lovely fishes but both jumped out of the tank.I Hope you'll do better than me.

Thanks VDM. I have lots of open spaces in my canopy, but no jumpers yet. Lots of places for fish to hide so I hope this tempers their flight response. I have a good 12" of water column above my rock work.

Just a note that it does gobble things in the sand bed and I think it ate some cyclopeeze the other eveing. I'm sure there is a sufficient pod population as my Yellow Wrasse was a voracious hunter of pods prior to it's demise.

Well just to report, this little guy spent most of the day out hunting the sand bed. It is gaining boldness and even patrolled the front of the tank. It does not shy away when viewed which is cool. A very good sand sifter and doesn't "dig" holes, but rather picks up a few grains of sand eating the algea/bacteria and then pumping them through its gills.

Awesome fish. I have been thinking of getting one. I think gobies are one of the coolest fish in the hobby!

Rob,

Terry Bartelme says that Rainsfords do well in 2s or 3s and your 179 gallon would be perfect for a band of Rainsfords!

Still expanding its sand sifting range. As I said before, it hovers right at sand level and all of the fish swim right over it.
