blue ribbon success!!!!!!

my blue ribbon eel has been eating for a week and a half now and i am overjoyed a lot of people have asked me to keep them informed on how it turned out because of the low success rate in the home aquarium for the blue ribbon eel and it has been a lot of work and very discouraging at times

what i did was offer krill on the end of a hanger every other day at first i was offering whole krill but then i started using just enough that it would stay on the end of the hanger i believe that the food must be small for the eel to get it they have very small mouths the eel also did not take the food until he dug a burrow for himself under my lr i believe this was a big factor it made him more at home

these are only my opinions and i dont want to encourage people to go out and buy these this may be a rare success but i did want to share my success there is a pic of him in my gallery thanks

Very good job!!! These are very difficult animals to keep. Most of the problem is getting them to eat in captivity. The next problem is getting to eat a balanced diet. I would most definately atttempt to mix up its diet when possible or give it a varied diet that has been soaked in Selcon. But this is an AWESOME achievement!!! You should definately be proud.
What are your tank parameters?
How often are you feeding?
What all are you feeding?
Can you post any pics?
Where did you get the eel from?
About how long is it?

thanks everyone

my params are all norm as far as i know i havent done a test in about 3 months but i do a 5 gallon weekly water change with io salt and ro water
i feed the others in the tank formula 1 and 2 also pygmy angel formula i alternate that and spectrum small fish formula every other day

and i feed the eel every other day so far only krill

the eel is a good 3 ft long though you would prolly never guess it he only comes out for a lap maybe once or twice a day most of the time its just his head and about 9 inches of his body sticking out of his burrow

i purchased him locally at a store called franklin feed its a farm supply store but the owners wife is a reef addict and has had a pet store in the back for many years its really much better than most pet stores ive been too

another thing i didnt mention in the first post is that i would prop the hanger up so that the krill was right in front of his hole and leave it for 10 15 min each time i tried to feed him i was trying to get him used to seeing it

woodstock thanks for linking that pic and thanks for all the comments ill try to get a pic of him eating kinda hard to hold the hanger and get the pic at the same time but ill give it a shot

Congratulations! I was at the LFS with my wife, and they had a black and a blue version of one of these. She got really excited, but I had to tell her no. They were mighty tempting, though. Hopefully yours will continue to eat, I've heard that they'll go on hunger strikes all of a sudden. Best of luck!

You can purchase live marine ghost shrimp. Perhaps that may be an alternative for a once a week feeding to the entire tank.

The black ribbon eels are just young ribbons that haven't matured. As they mature they turn blue and become functioning males. When they get even older yet, they turn a gold colour and change into females. The females only live long enough to breed and lay thier eggs and then they die.

he has been doing great except he decided to eat my small gold stripe clown so he has found a new home in my buddies 125 reef . ha has continued to eat and is still looking very sharp it was tough to get rid of him but i didnt want him dining on any more of his tankmates
