Temporary reprieve...

I am currently in the process of moving, and after much debate and rationalization, I have come to the conclusion that I will have to get rid of my livestock. The new townhome just doesn't have the room for my 55 gallon. Certainly a tough decision, as the hobby has helped to maintain my sanity throughout graduate school, but it is undoubtedly the right move for my current situation.

I might downsize in a couple of months, perhaps try my hand at a nano, but will start from scratch. I will also be keeping all equipment, as I certainly plan to set up the tank in the future. Heck, I might even consider a BB tank, but when this will occur, well, I don't know (I wouldn't call my current life situation the most stable...I don't know where I will be in approx. 6 months to a year).

So, with that being said, there is plenty of coral, liverock, and other livestock available at good prices in Cary, NC. I have given a couple of individuals first dibs, as they are starting up their tank. But, after them, everything is fair game. I just thought I would give my friends (local or otherwise) here at RS a heads up before I offer things up to the masses. At this point, I am not really prepared to ship anything, so you would have to come pick them up. To get an idea of what I have, take a look at my Reef Chronicle thread in my signature.

Thanks to many of you for showing me the light and helping me struggle through the hobby, it has certainly been a good "drug."

Take er easy

So sorry Scott I hope you'll be back to the hobby soon!!!

Can you post what's available? I may be interested in your rock. I am looking to buy dry/dead rock to slowly replace mine so I can boil/cook it.

I'm sorry you have to do a tear-down but I'm glad you are keeping your old equipment. I can easily forsee you setting up a tank again in the future and this step will make that much cheaper.

PS....before you do your tear down, buy some plastic bags and rubberbands. Get a good scraper and with the plastic bag held firmly against the glass, scrape some coralline into the bag. Lots of new reefkeepers are desperate for some starter spores. You can help defray the costs of your move because you have so much and so few coralline spores are needed to jump start a tank. (Sorry...it's the accountant in me).

Doni, I plan onputting something together today or tommorow, time pending. I have a good bit of rock in my fuge that would probably work for cooking (perhaps 30-40 lbs.). Even some of the rock in my show tank is coral free and might work.

Bummer Scott. Leasehold improvements? No way to do an in-wall tank in a closet or someting creative like that.

If not, I know your reprieve will be temporary. Maybe a nano at the minimum, eh?

I know what you mean scott. I have proven to be totally irrational in setting up my tank. I'm in a similar situation, except that I just graduated and don't even know if I will be going to grad school, and if I do, I don't know where.
Chances are I will not be here in 6 months and will have to break my tank down again. But you never know, right?
Sucks that tanks aren't as portable as they should be. At least there is a good reefing community in carolina and getting frags and starting again isn't that hard.

Awe man sorry to here the news Scott.
Hope the current changes are all for the better.
Keeping the equipment is the best thing you can do.
I have no doubt that in time you will want to start again and then you won't need to buy all new gear.
All I can say is start planning for the ultimate reef now.
Bare bottom? Closed loop? Surge tank? Frag system?
The possibilities are endless
Seriously don't stay away too long. Even without a tank for a period you are a great help here.

That's a bummer tohear, Scott. Lemme know when you decide to start up again so I can give you some frags. It'll gimme a chance to repay the favor.

Ditto to what sharks said.
You need to hang around, your input here is valuable. We all know you love your reef more than those cows up at state , so I'm sure you will have some type of reef running sooner than later.

I will be around, especially after I get this thesis written... The way dogma in this hobby changes, I would be scared to leave for more than a couple of weeks. I would find myself coming back to a completely changed methodology for reefing.

I already have plans for a 20-30 gallon or even attempt a hex. I will have to save up some money to do it right, but it is going to happen.

Thanks for the kind words everyone...
