What find of powerhead should i use?

I'm starting up a reef tank (30g L) 30"x18", and was wondering what kind of powerhead to get. should i use the Korilia, if so what size, do I need a hydor flo, or does the unit come w/ it? Or would a vortech work out better? Help please!

Vortech are hard to beat, but the price difference is quite substantial...the Hydor Flo's will not fit the "propeller type" power heads so don't worry about those...if you're on a budget a couple of Koralia's on either end pointed at each other will do a pretty good job.

I love my Koralias. For a 30L I would probably go with 2 #2s. I have a #1 on my 20 and it is just not enough. Maybe a 1 and a 2 depending on what you want to keep.

It was a little expensive, but you can't beat the flow:

LMAO!!

Hey, I can use my Nisson 5 on my 180. I'll have to DIY some propeller guards first though!

Are you controlling these with a wavemaker? I think that piece of equipment is far more important then the kind of powerhead...

Yes and no. Some powerheads (Koralias from what I've read) don't really fare the best when cycled on and off by a wavemaker. So yes, a wavemaker can help, but you have to do some research and be sure the pumps hold up well when constantly turned off and on.

Re: What find of powerhead should i use?

I don't have anything yet, I have spent the past 8 years creating current free or gentle flow systems (for seahorses). This whole concept of creating water movement is insane! So I'm not sure what to get, or what to use or how to set it up. please help me! I plan to keep SPS and clams. domo arigato in advance for the help!

Re: What find of powerhead should i use?

I'd say if you can afford it go for the Vortech MP-10. It's controllable and a VERY nice unit.

The beauty of the MP line is they are amazingly controllable and "programmable" to simulate many "natural" water flow conditions. Expensive but well worth it if you have the cash!!

If you're wanting SPS more is better

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: What find of powerhead should i use?

they offer so much more flow with less pressure. if you want leave me your addy and ill send you a pic of my updates.
i decided to use the old K's in another tank, just becuze they were around. if i didnt need them id get rid of them quickly. the seio's just seem to do the job alot better all around. i have them in my big tank, and i will put them in my 180 when the time comes to set it up as well. i found my new powerhead
