Your feelings on UV in the reef aquarium

Well I was very happy with my UV in mr FOT, but what are your feelings on using them in the reef.

I have never had a problem, surely not a necessity, but I think they have an added sence of security when it comes to pathogens.

Oi!

I agree it 'should not be necessary', and reefs do not 'need them', but once you have an ich outbreak and your royal gramma can't be caught and it flashes a lobophyllia almost to death [fortunately it 'lobed' and I still have a part of it] and you finally at 2:00AM take down the tank on a weekday to get the $#$$#^$# royal gramma out......it's worth having, HA!

The 'harm' it does is far outweighed by it's advantages. Harm = it does 'kill' everything that goes through it, advantage = it kills everything that goes through it.

Cheers!

Great posts everyone!!!

The life span of most bacteria is extremely short. Having a UV kill some of the good bacteria is not going to harm your tank.

Algal spores have long lifespans. UV will kill those too.

The only downsides IMO is cost and maintenance.

I have one and feel i would rather have it running on a QT or Medi Tank then on my whole system. Just never liked the idea of killing alot of good stuff when half the time its not needed. JMO

Through bad Quar practice I recently had ich in the tank which infected 2/3rds of my inhabitants. I battled it for 6 weeks with every natural method i knew but couldn't get rid of it. I bought a UV, installed it and within 2 weeks all the ich had gone.

The unit and all the plumbing cost less than if I had lost my Emp Angel and had to replace it. The running costs (30W) compared to a MH lighting system is minimal and the tubes need replacing every 6 months but are v.v.cheap. So I think the expense is very well justified.
