Zoo Poisoning

O Sunday morning I decided to take all my rock out for cooking.
During the process I was removing the zoos from the rocks so I could clean it. I felt some burning in my fingers but didnt think anything about it. To make a long story short About 2 hours later I was feeling pretty rough so I laid down. after about 3 hours I awoke . I couldn't breathe , I had one hell of a head ache and my hands had swollen up. After some pushing from another reefer and convincing we came to the conclusion I had been poisoned by the ZOOS.
By the time I hit the hospital My temp had risen to 104 degrees and I couldn't catch my breathe ,felt like the air was being squeezed out of me. I explain to the doctors what had happened and what caused it. The Doctor checked out the Internet about what was happening and what to do. Not fun being in a oxygen tent and plugged full of Drugs( I lie I liked the drugs)

Today I returned to have my finger checked out and he had to lance the wound and perscribe a special antibotic.. I will be going back every week for a while to follow up on my progress.

So to everyone especially you new reefers always wear some kind of protection while working on your tank. It could be a matter of life or Death, and Im not kidding when I say that.

Good to hear you are ok.
Just as a warning to people to wear gloves, this is a picture of my buddy's thumb after he came back from the hospital. The doctors concluded the infection was a result of something unknown in his aquarium. His entire arm was affected by this although this was the grossest part and apparently the route of infection or whatever it is (a lot of med school type people jumped in on his thread on RC, I don't know anything about this stuff, I wimped out and focused on ecology and conservation)

I now have the water that I was drinking all down the front of me from gagging, bleh...

Good to hear you are doing better, and that the outcome was positive, besides going to the hospital waaay too often (I have this hospital phobia)

Glad to hear your ok Min! That's one reason why I stay away from Zoos. We also have pets and I had heard of someone loosing their dog just hours after it had lapped up some of the tank water from a bucket.

Min . . . . a lesson for us all bud. Glad your recovering. Yes Gin, I remembered that as well, the bloke had a bucket with Zoo's in it and I thought the dog licked the LR but I can't remember exactly. But it keeled over a few mins later.
All take warning

Here is a link to the Reefkeeping Dangers thread at the top of the General Forum. I encourage everyone to read it if they haven't already. Our tanks are full of hazards that some doctors may not consider unless you bring it to their attention.

Karma to you Nikki, beat me to the link! I bought a good pair of gloves just after Luis' episode with anaphylactic shock.

All soft corals emit toxic chemicals as their biological defense/warfare system. This is how they attack SPS and LPS to make room for colonization.

Oi!

That is one anaphylactic reaction you had, I'm happy to hear you are better. Palytoxin is nothing to joke about. My arm went numb for 6 hours just from holding a 'sea mat' for 10 minutes. Now when ever I move corals around I'm always aware of the 'slippery' feeling you get from touching them and I'm always rubbing my fingers in the water till they feel 'normal' before I touch another coral in the tank, and I wash after every time.

Cheers!
