Re: 50% Water Change

Make sure that the new water has as close to possible, the exact same SG and temperature. What all do you have in the tank? IMO it would be safer to do several 25% wc's instead.

Re: 50% Water Change

Be sure to have the new water mixing for 24+ hours.
Match PH, Temp, and salinity of the new and old water.

Re: 50% Water Change

Except in emergency situations, I don't advise water changes that big. Corals are surprisingly adaptive, and rapid changes can be just as bad if not worse than a slow increase in nutrients. I learned this the hard way once when I used too much ferric oxide in one shot, and bleached a few corals. Smaller but frequent water changes tend to yield better results.

Re: 50% Water Change

I do 25% water changes weekly myself, but one of my friends does 50-75% water changes regularly. I don't know many people who know as much about marine aquariums as he - he has been published in Advanced Aquarist for example. Keeps everything from ritteris to sharks.

I don't follow his regimen, but he has taught me that large water changes are nothing to be intimidated by. As long as the temp, pH, alk, and salinity match it should be okay.

Re: 50% Water Change

okay i just did a 45 percent water change didnt know if i had enough better to be safe though, the only thing that was a little different was salinty but it was 1.026 and the tank is 1.025 i think that will be okay.

Re: 50% Water Change

make sure that the water temp and salinity are exactly the same

One point or one degree is no problem... but just 2 or 3 can be deadly

Re: 50% Water Change

I had the same problem with nitrates in my one tank. I did 25% water changes for 3 days in a row to get it under control. Everyone was fine. When I did a 50% water change in my slightly larger tank, the corals all pouted for days.
