Depending on what type of reef lighting you want you will need a chiller. I put a 150 hqi metal halide lighting system on my aquarium and it took the tank temperature from 75 degrees in the morning to 89 degrees by the end of the day. A good chiller will cost you between 250-300 dollars.

Re: I want to start a 24 gallon nano cube

depending on the nano you get, you should have lights installed already.

You will likely need:
Timers = $30 ($15 ea)
Power strip = $10
Additional jet pumps for flow $40-$60
Liverock is a substantial investment if you get GOOD rock $200-$300
A stand $100-$200

And then livestock and maintenance...

The rocks shouldn't be more than $200. I put 25 pounds in my aquapod 24 and I bought it at $6/lb. You need about 1-2 lbs per gallon to give you an idea. Chances are you wont need a chiller because you can just put a fan on top an u should be good to go.

First off. Welcome to RS!

If you can fork out the money i suggest you get a refractometer ($40) instead of the hydrometer. the test kit might cost a bit more if you get indv. test. i find that if you buy an AIO (all in one) kit you dont really use most of it. i dont know which skimmer your looking at but 40 dollars doesnt sound like it would be great quality. and you would need to get a heater, powerheads, tank scrubber (optional really), And if you use fans to blow off the top of your tank (it causes more evaporation than normal) then possibly a RO/DI water system to manage your top offs. Although a RO/DI would be good to have even if you dont have a fan. HTH
