What annoys you

Even if i'm new to this hobby i found out something that really annoys me.

Reading a lot about reefing and the care that we take of are aquarium, and the price the environment pays. After reseaching the Rockwork thread i realised that the live rock i bought in good faith was taken from a reef to be sold , therefore plundering mother nature. And it bugs me. That's the reason i chose to do my next tank with dry rocks and some foam sculpting of my own. So thats what bugs me about the trade. The distruction of are reefs for are amusement. So here ; say what bugs you about the trade, and maybe attitudes will change, way of doing things, percetions. Anyway thats the aim of the thread.It doen't need to be on ecology or nature like mine ; anything in the trade.It could be the color of some supplies. False advertising whatever. I also like to add , i don't juge people who uses live rock, thats your business.

Well, in defense of using live rock, much of it is broken off during storms, and if not used in the trade will be washed out to sea. So I don't think it has as big an ecological impact as you might think. And it is beginning to be maricultured.

Mine is Banggai Cardinalfish. It is now an endangered species due to over collecting for the hobby. They are being bred in small numbers; we should not be buying anymore wild ones.

My second one is anemones. How people are not at all prepared to keep them before buying them. Most die from just sheer lack of preparation.

Bad news Basile. Unless you plan on stocking your tank with clownfish and xenia, just about everything you put in your tank has been plundered.

I prefer to think of all the people that have been enlightened by seeing my tank. There is value to that too. Its hard to appreciate what you don't even know existed.

i wouldn't say everything but clownfish and xenia. there are so many fragswaps where people are trading/buying corals from other peoples tanks. also look at how far breeding fish has come. From Matt Wittenrich breeding mandarins to Matt Pedersen breeding orange spotted filefish!! (both had articles featured in the first 2 issues of "CORAL" magazine.) its come a long way and will just keep getting better! We need to focus on breeding fish bigtime IMO.

I only but captive bred, fragged, or propagated livestock. There's a LOT more out there than you think. Also, captives tend to have a better survival rate.

In your thread you say you have a "young koran angel, heniocus, and hippo tang"....those are all captive bred?

just poking at you mike lol.....but yeah captive bred is the way to go if you can get it.

I have also thought about all that and have tried to be as eco friendly as possible as i can, i always end up paying more to get only captive breed animals or atleast they say they are... so i agree with you all i believe in CB and alternative ways to aquascaping like aragocrete and foam etc, ill try it when i upgrade my tank... but what really annoys me right now, are my cleaner shrimps always stealing food from my Anemones and my Acans...
lol, well now back to the subject... i also build (besides reefs) vivariums with poison dart frogs and in forums and such i found a long time ago 2 sites that help create consciousness and have some interesting plans by offering members to be part of a program of releasing captive breed frogs (and breeding them for that purpose also) upon request in to the wild in case of extintion, wich is currently at an alarming stage... so some initiative like this would be very interesting to see in the hobby, where we, the hobbyist by captive breeding and fragging, give back the mother nature what we can... sort of what they are doing in bali with the frag seeds and using electric current to stimulate growth on artificial reefs

Live Rock - Tampa Bay Saltwater Aquacultured Live Rock

psiconauta - feed you cleaner shrimps first. Give them a tough piece of clam and that will keep them occupied while you feed your other critters

thanks... i gave them a piece of silversides for my anemone last time i feed them but forgot the arrow crab...lol

I understand, this very well, but fish do reproduce much faster than reefs, that was my angle.Like i said things that annoy us in the trade.I'm not againts owning a tak and the critters we put in. I'm not a Utopian by all means.

LOL really? i'm asking, its easyer on my eyes that's why i choosed it lol.I also need glasses, my eyes are at that point in my life, Ah i love middle age . Ok Nothing else really, about the trade. I got another one, that annoy me sometime, You go to a LFS and you are there first but the person after you get served first and get the same fish you wanted. It happened to me once ; i was red in the face, and it showed the clerk, saw me and said No, you didn't want that fish did you? Lol bad day for shopping LOL.

By the way i didn't mean this thread to be heavy. I chose a heavy topick maybe but, got to keep it light and real too. Like i said i'm not a utopian.

As for the Live Rock, I saw a show on the Tampa Bay Live Rock. I saw where they've leased land from the government and go and lay tons of rock on the sea floor. Then after a few years they pick the rock up. This helps the reef trade as well as the local ecology as they have developed artificial reefs! I would tell everyone to purchase those rocks!

Thanks for the info i don't feel so bad then. I'm still doing my sculpture for the fun of it. But you didn't say what annoys you. you ca even say me lol
