Re: Cold SaltWater tank

It's more of a specialty tank. I wanted a catalina goby for a while until I learned they need colder water.

It's a decent and certainly unique idea, but remember that most people don't have these and wouldn't have expert advice for you, and that as it's a specialty tank, it can't house any warm water specimens with long term success. With that in mind, go for it, and post pics

Re: Cold SaltWater tank

Unless you live in an area where you can do your own collecting, the biggest problem with a cold SW system is where to get livestock.

As you can see, there are a lot of interesting things that could be kept, but outside of catalina gobies I've never seen much offered for sale.

Re: Cold SaltWater tank

There's one exporter in Australia. To justify the shipping costs, you pretty much have to make a large purchase.

Re: Cold SaltWater tank

LA occasionally gets in some species from Australia that require cooler water.

Trunkfish, Boxfish, Sharks, BlueDevils, etc.

Re: Cold SaltWater tank

I've done a few temperate fish species, just local stuff, not really cold water specimens though.
Steve Weast's tanks are the real deal though. The planning involved in his is some serious stuff. If I had the resources and time I'd be all over that stuff.

Re: Cold SaltWater tank

You also have to have a seriously thick acrylic tank. Otherwise the temperature difference between the room and the tank water would cause "sweating" which you would have to squeege off on a regular basis.
