Unhappy So bummed.

Well yesterday I posted a thread about my diamond goby being dead when I got home. Now this morning my black clown is missing. I didn't check the back of the tank to see if he jumped but I'm doubting that's where he is. I am so sad and bothered. I'm totally anxious to get home and see what else may be going on. I checked my water the other day and it was fine and I haven't had any problems until now. My tank is just about 3 months old, a little less. I just did a water change on Sunday, goby gone Monday, clown gone Tuesday.

I do have a hitchhiker serpant, and now just noticed what must be a brittle star oozing in and out of the rocks when I feed the rest of the tank, but for some reason I don't think the serpant is eating the fish. Although you know he does look bigger. I may have just answered my own question. Anyways, this blows!

Re: So bummed.

Oh, also, I have been target feeding the serpant regularly to avoid having him go after my fishies.

Re: So bummed.

Serpent stars aren't known to go after fish though they wouldn't ignore a meal of dead fish nearby. Green brittle stars are known fish hunters once they get large but if you are target feeding the star that is unlikely.
Check all of your parameters when you get home and let us know the levels.
What do you use for source water and did you test it prior to doing the water change?
The timing just seems a bit odd. Usually things improve after a water change.

Re: So bummed.

Serpents CAN be opportunistic feeders and they are known for catching sick/injured fish.

Good luck

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: So bummed.

Very odd indeed Lynn. Truth be told, my LFS is where I get my salt water from, and I've been dealing with this same store for several years, they are amazing. They also test my water for me whenever I want. I usually have about 20 gallons stored at home and I used water that I've had sitting there for a couple weeks. But that's my normal procedure so... again... odd. I will check everything when I get home.

Re: So bummed.

I do believe my goby was definitely sick when he died. But the clown has been fine until last night I noticed he would not come up from the bottom of the tank. I did a small feed, and he didn't care. I recently added a Koralia Nano... It's not that big of a difference in flow though so ..........

Hopefully when you get home, he'll be wagging his tail, begging for food!

Re: So bummed.

The flow certainly shouldn't bother a clown.

This day is so amusing I just have to share. I had a Dr appt this morning and brought my Reef Invertebrates book along. (A very thoughtful gift from Dentoid). I hate waiting with nothing interesting to read. Well today's random pages were about urchins and then starfish. Dentoid was talking about urchins and now here we are talking about starfish.
I am beginning to think Dentoid was right when he said the book was psychic.
