Yellow Headed Sleeper Goby

About 3 weeks ago I complained about having dirty sand and had many replies to get the sleeper goby.... So I did and I have seen him one time at the beginning of last week and thats it. Yesterday I noticed a hole dug in my sand. Could this be from him? Do those of you that have this fish ever see it? Im assuming it might be dead because my sand is still dirty, any other thoughts to help with my dirty sand or on where the fish is? Should I be more worried about this?

Re: Yellow Headed Sleeper Goby

I have one and I see it all day most every day. Unless I spook it he/she is constantly out swimming, sifting and generally re-arranging just about every grain of sand in the tank.

Could something have "Shifted" and hurt it?

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Yellow Headed Sleeper Goby

I have one.... it was very shy at first and then completely disappeared for over a week when I was doing a water change.

He reappeared unexpectedly (I figured he was a goner after that amount of time!) and is out and about all the time cleaning away. I don't know where he was hiding, but they do burrow.

Hopefully yours is taking an extended nap like mine... I don't know if he stayed buried the entire time, or was only out when I wasn't around? It's a great mystery!

Good luck... I hope yours resurfaces!

I don't think anything moved... The last time I cleaned the algae off of the sides was the day I got him. Hopefully he'll show. I didn't know they burrow. I hope he's taking a cat nap lol. Thanks guys!!

Re: Yellow Headed Sleeper Goby

I have a question about yellow headed sleeper goby:
I have one at the suggestion of my LFS for sand cleaning. This activity he does well but covers a couple of my LR's with sand. I dust them off and within an hour or two it's right back.

Does this sand on LR have a negative effect ?

Not in my opinion. The live rock still functions as a substrate for bacteria.
That said, it is sometimes unsightly, and sand that covers coral can be detrimental to the coral.
