Is this coral coloring up or dying?

I bought this birds nest about a month ago, Since then I finally hooked up my 250 MH in the middle and have it sitting about half way down. when i got it the polyps were extended but it was brown. It bleached a little about a week after i put it in. I am pretty sure it is light shock. but the pink comming out makes me think it is now getting more light. do you think it is going to make it?

*EDIT* Looking at the side by side, looks like it has been growing......maybe?

The pink color is what your looking for in this one. Although it appears to be a little bleached I think it will be just fine.

Re: Is this coral coloring up or dying?

I'd guess it's coloring up AFTER the "Bleaching" and your light might be higher K than it had before. In my experiments (they are VERY unscientific) I've noticed that my corals COLOR UP much better under the high k bulbs and I'm running some 20K that really make the corals POP with color. What temp are your bulbs?

It looks like it's growing regardless

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Is this coral coloring up or dying?

I am running the same spectrum bulbs as the store,(12k) but my lights are about 1.5-2 feet closer than their display tank lights are. but they are running 400 watters in lumenarc reflectors. mine is a 175/250/175 with DIY lumenarc styles made from 95% reflective aluminum. It was directly under the one of the 175 MH (about 2 inches from the surface or 15 inches from the bulb) for about a week then it went halfway down (6 inches under the surface or 20 inches) under the 250MH.......

I think I just hurt something!

I am glad to hear it will make it. I Bought a bunch of new frags with it and they are all growing and coloring up well. this one just didn’t acclimate as well as the others I guess.

Thank you for the input!!

Looks like you are using the 12k reeflux. Good bulbs!
If it's growing and/or has polyp extension, your good. If you need it to color up, maybe move it down slightly if possible.

Re: Is this coral coloring up or dying?

yes, I love the color of these bulbs although i did notice the 250watt one is a little more white than the 175 bulbs. It blends well. kinda looks like the sun is shining down on a reef wall. I took my VHO actinics out to save energy. Should i put them back?

Re: Is this coral coloring up or dying?

thats up to your and how you like you tank to look. the corals don't need the bluer light and grow better underlower k bulbs but the bluer makes them look better to the hobbiest IMO
