Question just a general question

Im running two penguin 200's in my 50 gallon. would it be wise to remove the carbon from the filter and replace with nano rubble and filter floss? or keep running the active carbon filters?

Re: just a general question

Are you using any Live Sand and Live Rock?

Is this a Reef Tank?

FO?

FOWLR?

It's best to rely on your Live Rock and Live Sand for biological filtration and not filter floss. Don't add Rubble as it will become a detritus trap.

Tell us more about your system

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: just a general question

Oh ok. Well I wouldn't really rely on the HOB for my filtration mainly because I suspect that at some point you'll want SOME coral in there. They are notorious for catching detritus and then quickly becoming high tech Nitrate Factories. This isn't much of an issue with FO or FOWLR but Coral don't tolerate (generally speaking) Nitrate )NO3) very well.

For now just be mindful but don't put LR rubble in there.

Re: just a general question

Honestly your Live Rock and your Live Sand will help a LOT! If you feed heavy or have "Messy" eaters (lion fish, puffer) you may want to go with a wet/dry but then again that's not ideal for a REEF set-up. Think long-term and if you even remotely think you may want coral go ahead and plan that way.

If I were you (and this is where I started out as well) I would plan for Reef just in case. Research a sump and a fuge (called refugium).

Re: just a general question

Your primary filtration is going to be your LR. Next on the list would be a protein skimmer. I would (and have) keep the HOB filter running with the carbon and floss but keep it very clean. I don't use the filters that came with the HOB just because of the expense. You need to avoid detritus gathering in the filter and just use it for polishing the water and removing the extra food etc.
