Nitrites/nitrates

Hey, does anyone have any ideas on keeping nitrites and nitrates down? I have been changing almost 50% of the water every week because the levels won't stay low and it seems really unnecessary to have to keep changing that much water and adding more salt........

All the fish in my tank are doing good and none are dead/dying either.

If you could post more specific details about your tank it would be to great help as to finding out the problem. If you are doing that large of water changes and its not going down you need to find the root of the problem. So if you could fill us in on every detail about your tank.

Re: Nitrites/nitrates

First check your test results against another test kit or better yet the LFS. that rules out a bad test kit/procedure

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Nitrites/nitrates

from that eye hurting post it seems that you are implying that you add your water then add the salt which is a very bad thing to do. but yeah more info is needed before we can give any anwers really

Check the source of the water.I have a RO system and still does not remove the nitrates from the tap water.I have City water and have nitrites and nitrates. Now I buy my water from the LFS.I had the water company over several times but still have the problem.

Re: Nitrites/nitrates

I thought a couple hermits I got awhile back were still alive and just always hiding, but they were all under this rock dead..so go figure I thought everything was okay but I had dead critters under my nose after all......just stupidity on my part.

On another note, I've changed 80% of my water just recently to relieve the high levels, and so yes, it's back to the 'norm' BUT I think my clowns may have received slight poisoning because they're kind of blotchy, not large spots but just small noticeable spots. Any ideas, will they be okay you think?
