I think i just screwed up

I changed the chemi-pure in my tank and rinsed but once i started everything up i got a cloud of dust in the tank and couldn't stop it.

Alls corals closed up, the fish (diamond goby and 2 percula clowns) are still swimming and inverts are still moving.

Did i just kill everything? how bad is this?

I am filtering the best i can and i have no mixed salt water to do a water change.

I hope i didn't kill everything, please tell me i didn't.

Re: I think i just screwed up

if the dust coated the corals i would take a small syringe and GENTLY blow the corals off. but if it didn't coat the corals with the dust then i think you will be ok just may take some time for them to open up

Ditto. The corals probably closed up because they felt the dust land on them.

Shouldn't be anything in Chemi-pure that would hurt the corals.

Just breathe
Crack a beer
And relax.
Let the filtration do it's thing and if you get antsy try to clean the corals "LIGHTLY" with a turkey baster.

Re: I think i just screwed up

what color is the dust? brown, black, orange or a whitish cloud???

it dosent sound like anything bad at this point, maybe the new chemi-pure was not rinsed good enough and what you are seeing is from that. that is what i am thinking anyway. after things settle(clear up) use a syringe like said or a turkey baster or PH or just swoosh the rock and sand with you hand or spoon...you may end up with a coating on everything(depending on how bad it is) and will need to wipe down everything and clean out your pumps/skimmer ect....

FYI; chemipure is not good for a reef for a number of reasons.
1. it uses aluminum oxide (good at removing high levels but leave enough phos for algae remain an issue)
2. it uses resigns, like used for RO/DI water, which does not do much in saltwater.
3. you could by carbon on its own and phosban or other iron oxide products to reduce phos and get better results and save money.
here is a link on what i am talking about.

Re: I think i just screwed up

Ok, the water has cleared and looks much better. The dust made the water look cloudy like the color when you rinse the bag of chemi-pure but not nearly as dark. Some Zoa's have opened again (only the moonlights are on now) so i am happy about that. the other corals usually close up when the moonlights are on so i will see how they react tomorrow.

So glad i didn't do any serious damage or kill the fish.

I use chemi-pure with a bag of purigen and phosguard in a via aqua media reactor. I though it would be better and easier than putting them in a media bag and dropping it on the bottom of the sump. if this isn't such a good idea i am more than welcome to other suggestions.

My tank is a JBJ 28G Nano so there isn't much water volume or room to work with in the rear chambers.

thanks everyone for the reassurance.

thats fine, but its just as effective to drop a bag those in your sump in a good flow area.

smaller bags with more frequent changes(like every two weeks) is better than changing monthly larger amounts anyway. really no wrong way to do it, you just dont want to leave the bags in more than a month...two weeks IMO...
