| Torch coral | My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon LOL...the title says it all... My cyano battle would be won by now if I could scoop the d*mned stuff up from the substrate and get the chunks out of the tank. Why would SOMEONE not manufacture such a thing?! A logical piece of tank equipment. I'm sure it would come in handy for lots of other tank-related mucking-about too... And should anyone go ahead and make one - I get dibs on the first one!!!

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon Try a small net. That works for me to get cyano off of the sand.

| Reef Lobster | Re: My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon Well, how pretty do you want it? I would say buy a large solid plastic spoon, Dremel slots or holes into it as you see fit, then use a soldering iron to "plastic weld" a longer piece of plastic to the end of the spoon. |

| Torch coral | Re: My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon I could try a small net! Thank you! That would work too...but a spoon would be nice - for other maintenance too. Doesn't have to be pretty (although always a bonus), but it needs a small spoon, not a large one, to reach into corners and whatnot, and the head of the spoon needs to be bent at a right angle...if you know what I mean... I was thinking of buying a small metal one if I could find one and bending the head - then somehow attaching it to a longer handle...but I'm not very good at the McGyver thing... Other than rust, is there any danger of using metal tools in a SW tank that I need to be aware of?

| Reef Lobster | Re: My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon Well, depending on if the metal is treated or coated with anything, if you bend it, the coating might weaken or crack and fall off into the tank.. and most of that stuff wouldn't be good in your tank. |

| Star Polyps | Re: My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon I just bought a long handle algae scrapper made by TOM with interchangeble heads , one of which is similar to a kitty litter scooper. Picked it up from That Pet Place online. Came 22 inch and two other lengths |

| Cabbage Leather | Re: My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon I have the same thing, three different attachments, a glass scrubber, a metal razor blade, the the kitty litter scoop thing. I bought mine from Doctors Foster and Smith for $9.79 - it is the 14" length which is fine for the RSM. |

| Cabbage Leather | Re: My Kingdom for a long-handled, slotted plastic spoon Yes, I have used it to scoop things from the bottom of the tank, such as pieces of algae. Sometimes I just don't want to change from a long sleeve sweatshirt to a short sleeve shirt so that I can "dive in" to the tank. I use this scoop to nudge a coral in the substrate, turn over a snail in distress, pick up things, etc. I was afraid to use the razor blade while attached to the handle because I thought my fish would swim into it or something (just call me paranoid), but I used the blade without the handle for scraping some algae on the back glass, and it worked fine. |
