Re: drilling rock

I don't know that I'd make the dowel wooden, but the drilling and connecting of rocks with a rod won't hurt anything.

Re: drilling rock

i agree, i would not go with wood... you could try going with some Marine Epoxy for the connection instead of the dowel

Re: drilling rock

Use acrylic rod instead of wood. It can be cut with a hacksaw in a vice.

Re: drilling rock

That's where I bought my "Rods" from but I've also used (with success) plastic clothes hangers.

Be sure you drill OUT of the tank!!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: drilling rock

I used the fiberglass driveway markers from Lowes or HD. Cheap and very sturdy. Just get the larger diameter, 1/2" I believe. Cut of the reflector part and the rest you can use. I paid $15 for about 9' of usable rod. Then just drill your holes with a masonry bit and put together like you want. Here is how mine look:
