| Tridacna maxima | Re: is AmQuel plus reef safe??? Its a popular opinion on here that you shouldnt use stuff like this. If the nitrates are up there is a cause, and stuff like this is a "band-aid" for the real problem. Can you post some more about your tank like size, age, bio load, filtration, stuff of that nature. This will give us a better idea what the ACTUAL problem is so you can FIX it instead of just cover it up.

| Elegance coral | Re: is AmQuel plus reef safe??? Water changes will lower your nitrate levels. You do not need any chemicals. I may be wrong but to lower the nitrates by way of chemical I would think it is actually reducing the bacteria that is making the nitrates. JMO.

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: is AmQuel plus reef safe??? I've got to jump in on this one. The product is Amquel plus. It is not going to reduce nitrate. It is an acceptable product to make amonia less toxic. Usually used in a qt or hospital situation. It does not remove the Amonia but does reduce the toxicity. Yes it does smell horrid

| Do I look as lost as I am ![]() | Re: is AmQuel plus reef safe??? your friend is looking at things wrong. You lower your nitrates through water changes. If you're having increased Ammonia (which is what Amquel is used for) you have something ELSE going on in the tank and you need to address that and not cover it up. Good for you for asking.

It's ALL gotta go!! Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change. Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian) This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%. | Acropora | Re: is AmQuel plus reef safe??? IMO amquel should be in every reef house. No it should not be used to control ammonia, but its good to have on hand in case of an emergency. I have always added a few drops to new arrivals when acclimating as well. Its about the best fish bandaid you can get, but should not be used as a substitute for a good bacterial bed. |

| Acropora | Re: is AmQuel plus reef safe??? BTW, amquel plus does neutralize or remove nitrite and nitrate as well, but again it shouldn't be used in place of a good bacterial bed. It also greatly reduces oxygen in the water, so it should be used minimally if used in acclimation. Like 1 or 2 ml. |
