i was thinking of doing this with my girlfreinds father who has a 150g and has no CUC other than 10 hermits

Honestly I think you'll be shocked at his prices. I added in excess of 200 "Critters" to my tank last year for what maybe 2 dozen would have cost (including the s/h). You can't go wrong with them.

is it safe to try and siphon it out when doing a water change or will the sand get sucked up??

you really can't ship to multiple addresses in this one. Usually a "Group Buy" you just get a good price because so many people are ordering at once. The Vendor usually initiates something like that. It works on skimmers, lights, pumps etc.

Something like (Live animals) you'd want to go together with a local reefer and have it all shipped to one location.

Yeah you can "siphon gently" and with practice you'll be able to get some up without too much sand. Don't "Poke/Dig" down into the sand though.
