Old hermits

I really don't know how long hermit crabs live but I just realized that I have not bought any in over ten years and the ones I have are kind of huge. They were tiny when I got them and I have about 10 of them.
The largest one is in a shell about as large as a golf ball.
I just thought it was interesting. I think these two spawn as they lock shells a lot without fighting. Usually when hermits do that, they are trying to steal the other's shell.
But the larger one is always smiling and the smaller one has a beautiful complexion

Re: Old hermits

Some types of hermits get huge and are the largest of the crustaceans, excpet for lobsters I would imagine. I once saw a hermit in St Marteen that was almost the size of a bowling ball and it was snacking on a dead barracuda. I am not talking about coconut crabs which are land crabs, this was in the water.
I doubt mine will get much larger and I don't have any barracuda to feed them

Re: Old hermits

They have a hermit about the size of a bowling ball at my university. The poor thing is kept in a BB 10 gallon tank! I had to feed it over the summer. It couldn't get any traction on the bare bottom to move its huge shell, so it would jump out of the shell to grab the food. It was a little creepy!

The proper place for that crab would be in a bowling alley
