Updating....

Well originally the plan was to go with a 10 and set everything up from scratch, but today at the LFS I decided I am going with a Oceanic Bio-Cube 14g. Just can't resist. But before I make the purchase I have a few questions.
1.Can the lighting be easily upgraded? (it comes with 48w 10,000k PC and 48w actinics)
2. How well and safely does the built in back filter operate? How easy is it to mod?

Re: Updating....

Yes they can be updated "Easily"

The "Back Chambers work like a sump to hold "Stuff" and keep it out of sight. Remove all Bio-media (bio-balls, ceramic rings etc) and you'll want to only use ONE sponge and replace/change it a few times a WEEK!!!!

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Updating....

It does not have a skimmer as far as I know, I looked in the back and there are 3 chambers, first chamber is the overflow with some carbon or some filter media, the second chamber is empty right now but has two screens in it.And the third chamber has bio balls in it.

Re: Updating....

Nano-Tuners has some SWEET upgrade kits for them.

If you want to try a DIY you can attempt an LED into one from AquariumLED.com
