Using other tanks sand

I had a 29 gallon tank that had a deep sand bed that i am taking down is there any way i could use that sand in the tank to replace the crush coral in my other tank, if not than i think im going to get rid of it.
What should i do? Use it or not.

Re: Using other tanks sand

Does the other tank have livestock or is it a brand new tank?

Re: Using other tanks sand

Clean it in freshly made saltwater of the same salinity and give it several (saltwater) rinses to rid it of detritus, then use it.

Re: Using other tanks sand

You can re-use it. I would just rinse it really well first so that you don't get an ammonia spike in your other tank. Disturbing a sand bed will upset the bacterial balance and can create problems.

Once you get the sand well rinsed replace the crushed coral slowly so that the sand has time to recolonize with the beneficial bacteria.

Even if you use new sand you still want to replace the CC slowly, like 1/4-1/3 at a time.

Edit: Scott types faster than I do.
