What powerheads do you have? Also what return pump? Here use this to figure out your return pump....Reef Central Online Community

Re: calculations for flow

Well setting up a new tank. 75 gal with 2 koralia 2's gph 600 one whimpy 150 gph and the return pump total is 581gph coming from about 4 feet, that link although cool doesn't have my model of pump. It hink the gph on the return will be about 500 gph (just a guess)

Originally I was gonna get a 30 gal but got a 75 for Christmas, the Koralia 2's would have been fine for that, what should I add or should I ditch the 2s and get different ones

It's all preference. I seen a tank today on RC that had 3 Maxi jet 1200 without mods. It had to be bigger than a 120g full of Sps. I would think that for the time being you'll be fine with your Koralia 2 pumps. Just guessing your turn over will be about 25x.

O yeah what return pump do you have?

Re: calculations for flow

in all my reef tanks i use ONE main pump for everything except my skimmer. in my tanks i circulate the water in the display atleast 8 times an hour. but calculate your rise becasue your head pressure will drop and your UV and skimmer into it also (350GPH each). i run stright up with 2 ball valves comming off a T for my U.V. steralizer and aditional one incasee my pump n my Pskimmer goes out i just run flex tubing with a venturi and i dont have to buy a new pump. after the ball valves i put a T at the top for my supply to my overflows. this way i have no uglllyy power heads in my aquarium i got 2 maintence issues and just less pumps/clutter underneath in my refugium. so you got plenty of room to work/clean and IMO just easyer and better to work with =)

Re: calculations for flow

Although many don't advocate it, I too like to push as much through my tank and sump as my drains will allow. The problem is over-feeding the skimmer. To combat this my skimmer only gets fed so much from a drain, and the rest gets pumped back into the sump.

However, I still use 4 korallias in my 180.
