| Plate Coral | Cyano outbreak, What to do?? I think I have a small case of some cyano bacteria running throughout my tank. What is the best way to get rid of it? CUC? And if so what? Right now all I have are turbos. That is should change today after I go to my LFS though. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it? I do a 5 gallon water change every week. The tank is 24g.

| Torch coral | Re: Cyano outbreak, What to do?? I would do a 50% water chance and clean all your power heads and stuff and it should help get rid of it.

| Plate Coral | Re: Cyano outbreak, What to do?? Really cleaning the powerheads will do it? Now that I think about they are dirtyyyyyyyyy but I never really thought that that would be the problem... Hmmm looks like I will be cleaning them soon lol. I just did a water change so I am gonna wait a few more days until my next one. By the way I do use RO/DI water. And the out break is very small but still there!

| Harlequin Tuskfish | Re: Cyano outbreak, What to do?? I would check your feeding. its probably a combination of overfeeding and possibly not enough flow. look for dead spots and adjust the power heads so there is flow in every nook and cranny of your tank. that might help

| Scopas Tang | Re: Cyano outbreak, What to do?? i had cyano for 3 weeks.. tried everything that you could possibly suggest... what ended up working for me was throwing some macro in my display behind some rocks so its not obvious... then manually removed as much cyano as possible and did a water change... 2 weeks later... no cyanno knock on wood ![]() |

| Yes that's me. | Re: Cyano outbreak, What to do?? I had a big out break of Cyano in my Biocube... I had no fish and no coral in there. Only a CUC so there was no food introduced. My lighting was the stock Biocube PC lighting. Water was store bought Saltwater and they use RODI and Mix Fresh batches of 8000 Gallons every day. All of my readings were great with no reading giving any reason for there being Cyano in the tank. As it turns out the Cyano was using up the Phos so the tests were at zero. The tank went from this: ![]() to this: ![]() to this: ![]() in a matter of 1 week even with cleanings every other day. The straw that finally broke the camels back was when i came home from work and it looked like some one put a RED FUZZY Sweater over my live rock..... ![]() I did a Massive cleaning... took the rock out of the water, and placed in shallow bins filled with saltwater. did a light scrubbing with a soft brush. Rinsed in clean saltwater then scrubbed alittle more. Final rinse in RODI and back in to a tub of FRESH CLEAN SALTWATER. I vacuumed out as much of the red stuff off my sand and emptied 1/2 the remaining tank water. I added the rock back and filled up the tank with CLEAN FRESH SALTWATER. I also started using a Phosban reactor. with no changes to my daily routine after that the Cyano never came back. I had a similar problem in my GF's tank and she had fish and was over feeding and ..... well lets just say she was doing everything the way she shouldn't I performed the same cleaning and the Red stuff has still not come back. (her lighting was 2 x 150 HQI, 4 x 65watt Actinics for 10 hours a day.) The $50 investment in the phosban reactor, pump, and media is well worth not having the frustration of the red stuff and extra cleanings. not saying that this is the most practical or the right way to do things but it worked for me.

| Manta Ray | Re: Cyano outbreak, What to do?? What's the source of your RO/DI water? Is it from a LFS or from your unit at home? Have you checked the water for phosphates? Adding some nassarius snails to your CUC would be a great start. The nassarius snails stick to the sand bed. They're scavangers so they'll eat extra food if you're overfeeding.
