Smile My local 212,000 gallon reef :)

I was fortunate enough to visit the new Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Science today which has one of he largest coral reef exhibits in the world and thought I would share. Steinhart Aquarium: California Academy of Sciences

The new aquarium features a 212,000 gallon 25' deep Philippine Coral Reef exhibit that is truly amazing. There are over 1000 sq ft. of corals which are all aquacultured. It's also home to over 2000 fish including black tip reef sharks.

They have been stocking this tank over the last 6 months and the new aquarium opened on September 27th. Here's a link to a behind the scenes look at how it was built. Academy of Sciences home to new coral reef - 9/29/08 - San Francisco News - abc7news.com

It was pretty interesting to see that they are using Mangroves for reducing nitrates etc. You'll see the mangrove trees in the back of this picture. Although the aquarium is places to take maximum advantage of natural sunlight, notice all the lighting rigs with approx 100 MH lights above the tank. They are 1000W 14k & 20k lights.

I can't wait to see this reef when it grows out more. Below are some other pictures I took but don't really do it justice..

What's the split between salt v's freshwater in the membership and speakers? I looked at their website a couple of yrs back and they looked to be predominantly freshwater focused?

Wow!!! That looks awesome!! Wish my house have the space to put such a huge aquarium in, but I'll have to learn how to scuba dive to clean the tank up!
