| Cabbage Leather | New Rocks! Sorry It's so long. Ok... So I'm about to order some much needed LR. I'm short probably around 20-30 lbs. and I have some that has close to no pores at all that I want to ditch. Sooo... I'm going to order 40lbs. from Reef Cleaners. On their website it says that there is no need to cycle these rocks. This is contrary to everything I've read here on RS, so I e-mailed them and asked them why I shouldn't have to cycle. In their response they tell me that the reason for cycling is to get rid of any die off that may occur. They tell me that these rocks come from a reef that does not exist anymore, and that all rocks have been through a thourough cleaning process. I'm still wondering whether I should go through the whole cycling process??? Anyone care to give their opinions... Also if I should cycle, can I do it inside? It's awfully cold outside here lately, and I don't know that the rocks would get verry "baked", or "cooked" if I put them in a tote outside. I thought of piling all the rocks into a spare 10 gallon that's lying around, and throwing in a powerhead. I would change the water once a week along with my tank water. Also I've been having trouble with brown algae lately. Some of it is diatoms, and for a while I had some Dynos that I fear may be coming back. Will the new rocks I'm going to add help me rid my tank of these? I only feed every other day, and the lights are only on for 8 hrs. I run an Aqua C with the Rio 1400. Thanks in advance for all your input and I'm sorry again that this is such a long question.

| 8 left feet... | Re: New Rocks! The rock that reef cleaners sells is not live rock. It is base rock which means it is just rock with no live stuff on it. There shouldn't be a cycle with this rock because there is nothing on it to die off. However, some base rocks need to be "cured" or "cooked" because they have a buildup of organics in the rock that can leach out into the tank in the form of nitrates and/or phosphates. I'm not sure if that is the case with reefcleaners rock.

| Cabbage Leather | Re: New Rocks! That was my thinking... I thought I might should go ahead and do a cycle, or "cook" them for a bit, but the guy said they went through a cleaning process, so I wasn't sure whether or not it would be necessary.

| Do I look as lost as I am ![]() | Re: New Rocks! I put a HUGE amount of faith in what John (at Reef Cleaners) has to say. This is Reef Rock but it's not rock that has any LIFE on it at all. It's clean as can be. It will make GREAT live rock once it's seeded in a tank. If I were replacing rock or starting a new tank I wouldn't hesitate buying from John and putting it directly into my tank. That's just me though. ![]()
