Mantis heart attack

I got a piece of liverock today as a centerpiece for my new 12 gallon.

Imagine my surprise when my niece said "look at that thing that jumped off the rock". I looked in and found this lobster looking thing in the tank sitting on top of the sand. I freaked out! It was a mantis shrimp! I think it was oxygen starved as it was on liverock that wasn't in water for about 10+ minutes. My niece quickly grabbed a net and got him, and I looked him up in the my book and sure enough it was a mantis.

I didn't know what else to do, so I flushed him down the toilet. I know these things can be pretty nasty, and didn't want to deal with bagging him and taking him back to the store, and don't know if they would even take him.

After flushing him, I quickly cleaned the toilet with chemicals and flushed it 3 more times.

This little guy will go down the drain, won't he? I don't want to be "indisposed" and find him still in there. I hear they have the force of a .22 caliber bullet, and pray he won't be banging around in the pipes.

Well, lots of people do buy them, there is a mantis thread on here. you might be getting some flack.. But they scare me too..

They can be nasty, but you can keep them in the tank.. Doesn't matter now, huh? .. he should have gone down the toilet with the 1st swish.

Check out the mantis thread, some are really pretty

Re: Mantis heart attack

Some people LOVE them others HATE them. I don't have much of an opinion either way. I've seen some that were AMAZINGLY colorful and they are smart.

Odds are the Fresh water, Septic Bacteria and the chemicals would do him in. If not he'll probably come back in a few years the size of a COW and really be mad! JUST Kidding

There are much more humane ways to get rid of such but that's another issue and in my eyes "to each their own".

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Mantis heart attack

well, i hope you dont live close to my beach, i know i will find him the hard way if you do, lol. with a little girl in the house and being courious getting rid of it was a good thing, IMO. i think i would have done the same thing, flushed it or crushed it and trash it. no worries on it living, i am sure its dead, it will not distroy your plumbing trying to get out.

Re: Mantis heart attack

speaky strictly monetarily mantis have a value now. You probably could have gotten 10-30 bucks for it depending. If nothing else donated it to the LFS to sell to someone else. And the very least you could have recycled it for fish food.

That poor guy! I don't have an opinion about whether mantis shrimps are good or bad, but it's still a living creature. It should have been shown some respect. You could have bagged it and taken it to a LFS.

LOL We could go round and round about this subject, huh BOB ?

We have all done it Arizonagrace. I have had like 5 Hitchhiker crabs that have eaten a lot of my polyps over the years. And when I finally would catch them I would dispose of them...

Bob and I have gone round and round about the time he chopped up an innocent live damsel for mantis shrimp food...

Now I have learned that these innocent hitchhikers can live in someones tank who likes them and can even live in a sump or fuge instead of a main tank.

I guess to save you from all the hassle from here on out and if you find anymore post on here instead of flushing... Someone may want it and take it off your hands for you...

Yes to some extreme and to some "just right". It's all in your own personal thoughts and beliefs.

Re: Mantis heart attack

I do feel bad about flushing him, but at the time, my niece was running toward the toilet with him. My first thought was to catch it and leave it in a net until I could figure what to do, but I guess my cousin freaked me out by yelling to my niece to flush it quick before it struck her.

I know there are beautiful ones out there, but in my area, no store will take them in. It's a shame I didn't have another tank to put him in until I could have given him to someone.

We have learned our lesson and we are fully ashamed.

well, then you are fully redeamed in my eyes.

i just have a REAL BIG soft spot for them. lil googly eyes, inquisitive personalities, and the fact that they are just about one of the most intellegent critters you can keep in a reef.

it seemed like your first post was like "HA" soo yea, i got a lil butthurt.

i just love mantis shrimps.
