Re: Lunar Lights

I leave mine on all the time, it won't hurt anything.

Re: Lunar Lights

Thanks!
I wanted to make sure they dont need a total dark period. I finally have the green algea somewhat under control. I still have to scrape the glass a couple times a day, but it has gotten better since I put the daylights to 10 hrs and the actinics to 12 hrs a day.

gotta get rid of the snail and polyp eatting Bristle worms.

Re: Lunar Lights

Get rid of the snail?
Bristle worms are not known to eat polyps. They are usually eating detrius stuck in/between the polyps. They are generally considered good cleaners and are only a problem if they get large or if you touch one.
As far as the original question, there are several schools of thought. Some say you can leave them on all the time some say the fish need a total darkness period. I go somewhere in-between. The moon lights stay on much later than the regular lights but go off at 11 or 12. If I had a large anemone (specifically a carpet) and small fish, I would want some kind of light on to help the fish avoid the nem at night.

Re: Lunar Lights

i only use 1-5wt white LED night light on a 210. very minimal light, yet just enough so the fish dont slam into total darkness.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Lunar Lights

ahh thanks! When the guy sold him to me (if your talking about mine) it was so tiny that I didnt think I would ever see him. then Poof, like when alice ate a peice of the majic mushroom this monster appeared!!
I enjoy the moon lights at night very much. just dont want it to be too much. I hear people talk about the lunar cycle and things happening with fish and coral during that time. so I didnt know if I need to alter the timing for this to happen or if it is something of a biological clock thing.

I didnt mean to get rid of the snail, I mean what ever is eating the snails. Assuming its a monster bristle worm Ive seen 2 and one is taunting the trap now but im not being effective in capturing any of them yet.

Re: Lunar Lights

This is the one I was referring to. Actually it started as one and split. I believe it is 5 now but Witfull could tell you for sure.

Here is a link to his thread if you want to see a great tank.

Re: Lunar Lights

ok... there are 2 pepermint shrimp, blue stripe, a bright red one, 2 brownish red with yellow on their pinchers, brittle star, bristle worms/SNAKES, turbo snails, other snails I live in South Florida by the keys, and Biscayne National Park and the Everglades, Son brought some snails home so I am not sure what they are, one is a smaller conch. I am having a problem getting pics to this site, but I do have pics on my website at Parrot-Dise Reef
If it helps this discussion at all.

Thanks and nice to chat with all of you.

Re: Lunar Lights

WOW That thing is a true MONSTER. I thought mine was big. LOL Im gonna sit and check out that monster tank. We have a 150 that is a dinosour build. sitting in peices waiting its turn in line to be brought to life. Seemed like a good idea, and im sure it will be just fine as soon as I win the lotto to get it up and running... and then we have to talk about the patience to wait out the cycling, which that is not a virtue in my house, and then I have to win the lotto a 2nd time to fill the monster with stuff.

do you use lunar lights
