Food Composition...

Ok as many of you know (or may not but you're about to) I changed over from my own "Home Made Mush (HMM) to Rod's Food a while back. I have to say... WOW! I love it! But with the recent advent of threads on here talking about "Adding this vitamen" and "adding this supplement" I started wondering if I need to be doing somehting to Rod's food. I've contacted him directly and am waiting on his replay as there are some "Grey Areas" on the website about ingredients ( I think it's just a couple of typoes but we'll see).

Anyway... I LOVE this food and my tanks seem to be THRIVIING! Here is a list of the ingredients taken directly from Rod's Food - The Complete Reef Food

Quote:
Shrimp, Scallop, Oyster, Clam, Squid, Octopus, Brine, Krill, Mysis, Grouper (or perch), Red Nori, green Nori, Broccoli, carrot, Frozen red plankton, Golden pearl (7 sizes), DTs Oyster eggs, Selco, Fresh hatched brine, Freshly harvested rotifers,
so with this list of ingredients do I need to be adding anything to my mix?

I'm trying to keep it as simple and "convenient" as possible and right now it's VERY convenient!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Food Composition...

I'll have to do a comparison to this, because I was convinced to try a food call "reef roids" I'll have to get you the ingredients, but after 2 weeks I am noticing a certain colony of zoas WIDE OPEN, nice and bright eyed. I will get some pictures tonight.

sounds like that rods food has EVERYTHING needed...

Re: Food Composition...

I have been using Rod's food, along with mysis, for about 4 months now. The entire tank seems to respond really well to it. A little Rod's food goes a long way. IMO, it's worth the money (unless you are going to make your own mush).

Re: Food Composition...

What about the broccoli and carrots? I was under the impression we were not supposed to use land based ingredients. Are those just considered not good but not bad?

Yes it DOES go a long way. I learned that after the initial feeding. Now I take what "Feels" like a weeks worth of Rods and thaw it in some RO/DI water.... get it all mixed up... if there is something "Special" I want to add that's when I add it.. Then I freeze it into a container and when it's "Feeding Time" I literally break off some large (now diluted) chunks and drop them into the tanks. The whole tanks goes WILD over this. It's almost like "Crack for the Reef".

Lynn I don't know about the "Land Stuff" and was surprised to see it in there. Maybe "land foods" are considered No-No due to pesticides etc. I just don't know.

Re: Food Composition...

Well I know Lee says not to use them since they are not natural to the diet. I just don't know if it is harmful or just useless. Big difference if you are wanting to switch to Rod's. I see they are relatively low on the ingredient list so there shouldn't be much in there.

Re: Food Composition...

Ok I heard back from "Rod" via email and here's what he had to say:

A) Website is being updated which will take care of the "Grey Area" I mentioned above.

B) There's no need to add any other items to Rod's food as he's tried to include something for just about anything we keep in the tanks. ('m sure there are exceptions but for the majority it's all inclusive but we ALL like some variety)

C) It has a very long shelf life as long as it's sealed and doesn't get "Freezer Burn".

D) He WILL be at MACNA-XX

E) He's going to come over to RS and check it out. He said the company is doing very well and takes ALL of his time up but he'd like to check us out.

Re: Food Composition...

I just found out about a place near my work that carries it. I might even stop tonight but definitely this week sometime. I'm running low on mush and at the very least I can use this until I can make more. Who knows, I may be like Al and switch entirely.
Regardless it will be added to my food rotation since I hear so much good about it.

Re: Food Composition...

My tanks highly suggest it Honestly I have no reservations about it. I still mix in some "goodies" now and then and feed "Just corals" once a week.
