Unhappy Cyanide killing reefs

I know this is old news but I figure maybe some people don't know how common the use of cyanide has become. I was naive enough to believe that this practice was diminishing.

Unfortunately, the practice gets more and more widespread every year. The collectors don't care that they're killing the reef, only that they get paid for what they catch today. The hobby/industry needs to implement some type of cyanide test, and implement total bans on fish caught with cyanide or any other drug as well. Gonna put a lot of fish in short supply, but at least the ones we get will live...
I remember reading that there is a mortality rate of over 80% of the fish dying between capture and getting to our tanks. That's one of the reasons I get so darned upset about the needless fish deaths in our/my tanks. Sometime $hit Happens, and is mostly out of our control, but mixing non-compatible fish, not quarantining, and not acclimating are just examples of pure negligence.
As I posted in another thread, if we don't start being more responsible, we will lose a big piece of our hobby.
Off the stinkin soapbox Boomer!!

you know what I am afraid of? Some day when all reefs are gone the goverment are going to rob my corals and say they plan on replnishing the coral population that they destroyed, and say "have a nice day" as they clumsily place the corals in some horrid shipping method and send them off.

I think the problem in these places where cyanide use is common is poverty and greed. Who's gonna worry about the reef and fish if your starving !

I agree cheeks, and as much as I hate to admit it I would pay a few more bucks for stuff to make it worth while for the collectors to spend the extr effort to net collect w/o drugs. I think in several years aquaculture will replace wild collecting.

I think one possibility would be to ban any fish imported from these places unless they can show that the fish are net collected. You have to hit these places in the wallet for them to get the hint.JMHO

Cheeks the only problem is that the companies that buy these fish from the poor collectors could care less about what is happening to the reefs. The thinking is "we didn't do it... they did." Everyone will point the finger at the other, and the problem will never be solved.
Montanreefer,
I agree 100%, the only thing that will make me hand over my corals peacfully is the barrle of an M1A2-Abrams tank.
