| Torch coral ![]() | Too much flow for a 180? ok, I am planning on getting a 180, and setting it up by the end of the summer. I am lookin at the water flow part of it now. I am sick of powerheads in my tank, looking bad, always on a constand flow... I have looked at SCWD's and frankly, they are not quite doing it for me... So I was stil doing some poking adn I came across this... http://www.oceansmotions.com/ According to those who have them on that other board, they love them... [This is long, be careful ]http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=312496&perpage=25&pagen umber=1[/url] There are esentially 2 different models, a 4 way and an 8 way... I was thinking that I would get one of each, putting one on a closed loop, and one as my return from the sump. So here we get to the flow question, I am going to use my ampmaster 2100 as a return pump from my sump. I expect about 8 feet of head pressure. I am plannign on splitting the flow and sending about 300 GPH to a 75 gallon refuge. (Is that too much flow throuugh a fuge, or should that be upped? I expect that would leave about 1200-1500 GPH going back to the tank. through the 8-way oceanmotions device... (The AM2100 is upgradable, should I upgrade it to a 3600?) I was then going to run a sequence 3600SEQ12 or 4200SEQ12 (these are the 750 series) through the closed loop. Which sequence would you get for a closed loop on a 180? These returns would go through the 4 way, each attached to one of the revolutions that the guy is making... Is that too mcuh flow for a 180? I would like the contents of the tank to grow into more than just softies, but right now, I have to keep a koran angel from eating the corals... Thanks for your help guys... ( I hope this is not too long winded, adn confusing for everyone.) Mike

| Reef Shark ![]() | I thinkthe major factor will be how much will your overflows handle? Most 1" overflows are rated for 800 to 1000 gph, and in order to handle the full power of the ampmaster, you'd need at least 1 1/2" bulkheads and the overflow would have to be sized to accomodate it. I just went through this when I had an acrylic 180 built. That little detail slipped through the cracks, and i ended up with 1000 gph overflows, so I can't use an ampmaster for my closed loop. Original intent was 1 overflow to the sump, the other one feeding an Ampmaster 2100. Now, if I ever set this up, I'll be limited to a Mak4 or similar pump for the CLS. I really like the idea behind the OceansMotion. So much so, that I sole my 2 3/4" sea swirlys that I was going to use for the CLS. My intent will be to use one of these in a 4 port unit. Maybe plumbed 1 to each corner of the tank... |

| Torch coral ![]() | Boomer, I figured on using the 2 overflows (more or less standrard on RR tanks) to feed the sump. which should allow for 1500ish GPH flow right? I was thinking I would have 3 @ 1 1/2 inch holes drilled in the tank to feed the CLS. I would think this should be plenty of area to keep things from getting stuck on the bulkheads... I have debated whether or not to drill holes in the tank for the CLS returns. the other option being going over the top. I would like at least one hole driled close to the bottome so I can set up a spray bar on the bottom of the tank without having to run a pipe all the way down the inside of the tank. Oh yes, and I am planning on this being a BB setup.

| Reef Lobster | Mike I just upgraded my return water flow in my 180 today(Eric did) I have no answers to your questions:-( but I can share with you what I have. By the way I have seen and read a little about the system from oceansmotions and it looks like a great aid to promote great water flow. Love to hear feedback from you after you see it up and running in your reef. I was running a Mag 18 to a SQWD and spliting it to both returns, I never liked it since the beginning. The flow was weak and the intermitent idea of it was vogus(WAPOS)JMHO So as of today I have a Mag 9 dedicated to each return(one goes down the other still is running)sort of a back up. I also see a lot more flow(cant wait to see how the corals will react to it in a few days). In addition to the Mag 9's I have two TUNZE Turbelles 6000 that run at about 75% through my TUNZE multi controller.(bad thing is that they are bulky) I managed to hide one with rock;-) It would be great to follow this thread and see your feedback on your new system. I would like to add a little more current from the back of the reef. Luis |
