| Golden Moray | Re: Research for a Upgraded 40 Gallon Breeder Well you don't want to throw away the performance of the CL system with cheap PVC. The max GPH of a .75" PVC sch40 is about 350gph. So 1400gph total mac capacity. 1.25" maxes out at about 1200gph and 1.5" maxes out at about 1800gph so the 1.5" would be perfect after all.

| Fire Coral | Re: Research for a Upgraded 40 Gallon Breeder ok i see i misunderstood how much a external pump cost . i want to do this the right way instead of buying crap first then rebuying the good stuff second . will this pump be enuff what would it do a no head pressure ? it says it does 1270 gph is that at any head pressure ? a CL has no head pressure right ? the pump is a Pan World 100PX-X Magnetic Water Pump would this be enuff . it uses 130 watts and cost $175 bucks and i will use my current quietone 3000 for my return pump . it puts out 660 gph at 4' . this should be enuff for my return right? total turnover would be = 48.5 times per hour . thats 31.75 x per hour in the display 16.75 x threw the sump/refugium into the dispaly . the acutally sump/refueuim will have a flow thru rate of 22.75 x turnover since its a 29 Gallon thats a total of 190 watts of power used on water circulation . add 22 watts for a M/J 1200 for the aquac remora which i probaly will keep for this setup . since its rated up to 75 gallons

| Fire Coral | Re: Research for a Upgraded 40 Gallon Breeder does that sound good for flow ? because if so then i have lighting and flow all worked out . and how i want to built a stand .

| Fire Coral | Re: Research for a Upgraded 40 Gallon Breeder ok next i need a canopy of sorts to house the 6 t5 bulbs ?i would like to go with 2 80 mm computer fans that run on 12v. and run them of a 12 transformer that i already have runing on my ATO . this fans run low ampre so i wonder if my unervisal 12v transformer can power a 12v relay , and the two fans . ill get the ampre of evertything soon .

| Golden Moray | Re: Research for a Upgraded 40 Gallon Breeder If the wattages are the same it will be fine. As far as stands go if it cant stand up in full with out a single screw, nail, or drop of glue- start over.

| Has been struck by the ban stick | Re: Research for a Upgraded 40 Gallon Breeder Quote:
That is right that there is no static head loss in a closed loop circulation system. You do have friction loses due to the pipe and all the fittings, valves and such. But you can avoid most of this by upgrading a pipe size at the return side of the pump. A flow rating of 48.5 times per hour will put you up in the range of typical to reefers with SPS tanks. You should be able to hit them with the maximum lighting they can tolerate with flow such as that. Also you will have little morphing and should have thick, heavy, compact coral instead of the thin, light weight, spread out, scraggly, scrawny SPS corals that seem to be so common anymore. The 100PX-X is less efficient then the 50PX-X as you only get 14.4 percent more water for 44.4 percent more wattage used when using the 100PX-X instead of the 50PX-X. They likely are just using the same pump as a 50PX-X but with a larger motor as the only change in dimensions are that the 100PX-X pump is 1/2" longer. If the pump is 1/2" thicker it would definitely deliver more flow than an additional 14.4 percent as pump thickness on the 50PX-X is just an inch. However, 40 watts is not a huge amount tacked on to ll other wattage that is used by a reef tank. | |
