Wierd Occurance

I don't have a sump but I do have an in the tank overflow that feeds the skimmer. There is a strainer in it so anything large does not get in it and go through the pump. Anyway a little while ago I noticed something in the strainer which is not really under water. It looked like a long skinny fish.
I removed it and noticed it was a small fish, probably a gobi since I have a bunch of them but hanging on it was a mantis shrimp as long as the fish. Both were dead as it may have been in there for a week.
I don't know if the fish got caught in the overflow and the mantis went in after it or if the mantis killed the fish and they floated in or whatever.
I have not put rock in the tank in many years and never put any store bought rock in. It was all collected by me in the seventees.
The mantis may have come in with the seaweed and amphipods I collect locally as a baby. I would have noticed an inch long shrimp.
I once caught a 6" worm under my gravel. God knows what is living under there. The Loch Ness monster hasen't been seen in a while.

Re: Wierd Occurance

I think I will go shrimping in there to see what else I can find. I do find a crab once in a while. It may have come with the amphipods I collect.
The third one from the left on the bottom looks suspicious

Wow, healthy things still grow in the water off long island! Isn't that where all the medical wastes used to wash up on shore? Like thousands of used syringes. Or was that on Manhattan Island, or Jersey?

If you look at the picture close you will see thousands of tiny syringes sticking out of the amphipods. I guess thats why they never get sick.
I still use that water im my reef. I don't have to dose anything, it's all in there

I have not been outside of Alaska but once in 33 years so all I know of the lower forty eight is from the horror stories that hit the national news. As all are probably aware, about the only news seen much is sensationalism. I have heard about a river catching fire in Ohio, and massive environmental problems all over the industrial areas of the east. Nothing is ever released in the news about clean ups or restorations and such. I grew up during the 60's when every thing was drugs, anti government, riots, assassinations, racism, forced desegregation, impeachments and national Guardsmen shooting college protesters. I then went to Viet Nam and things were even worse when I got back. I have pretty much lived in ignorance of life down their since 1974. No offense intended, but I was actually serious about the medical waste question.

Re: Wierd Occurance

I certainly remember the stories. Hopefully it has been cleaned up since. I know it hasn't by Newark. The water was really nasty there.

Re: Wierd Occurance

Paul

That is a very cool find. If it was only a couple of inches or less, it had to find its way into your tank recently from your food collection.

For those who have not experienced the NY/NJ coast. The waters here on the east cost have improved dramaticly over the last 20 years thanks to the general imrpovements in industrial and sewage management of air and water discharge. I've lived on a New Jersey barrier island for 8 years ant one time in my life and now vacation on another each year and the waters today are as clean and full of life as I have ever seen.

It is heart warming, to say the least, to watch pods of a hundred or more dolphin or a minkie whale spouting from beach in New Jersey of all places. It all due to the repopulation of bait fish as a result of ggod wildlife management practices. In the late seventies and eighties that would have been a rare sighting, now it's rare to go a day without seeing it.

Great!
Of course we only hear the bad news.
Glad to hear things have improved so much.

Re: Wierd Occurance

Yup the waters up here have drastically improved. It is amazing the amount of life that has come back.

Lynn, when you come up for MACNA next year plan a few extra days and we'll do some collecting if your up for it.

Nice find Paul. A mantis is one of the things I haven't been able collect yet but would love to find.

Re: Wierd Occurance

So you are actually going to go next year.
I thought I would never meet you.
I'll see what the schedule is like. A bit far ahead to make plans.
Maybe I'll buy tickets while I am there so I can't back out. Last year they were 1/2 price if you bought for the next year.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~
