is this guy trouble? (pic)

I'm pretty sure I know what this is it was purchased for my birthday as a flowerpot coral and I'm pretty sure this is the harder to care for of the two kinds that look similar. I read about them awhile ago and I belive one has 12(petals) and the other has 24 mine has 24 what is it? How hard is it to care for? Should I get rid of it?

this looks like a goniopora or flower pot definately harder to take care of than an alveopora the former tends to waste away after a short time in captivity I would take it to the LFS and trade it in for something hardier. HTH

Goniopora's are definitely a toughie, but they 'can' be kept... Steve Weast has a couple that are just huge that he's had for around 3 years or so.

I had a yellow one like yours and it lasted about 8 months (unfortunately)...

You might check out this article: Goniopora Corals. It's got a lot of good info on care and background info... a goni is probably not something I'm going to attempt again anytime soon, but who knows, you may have luck with it.

HTH.

i may be wrong here but i thought if it had 24 pedals it was an alveopora.

I agree, an expert coral. I'd return unless you feel up to the challenge and can't find a better use for the money you've spent.

Good question!

Thanks everyone, alot of thanks to reefer addict for the article. I'm not sure if I will return it or not yet I'd like some hammer coral or torch to replace it because it adds alot to the apearence of the tank. perhaps on thursday my lfs will get something nice to trade in on but its rare they get anything that I like enough to purchase I hardly ever even see any zenia thats why I was going with mushrooms and ricordia.

All the gonioporas should be place at the lower end of the tank.Better if they are right on top of the sand bed.Every once in a while stir up the sand around the coral using a stik. They seem to love detritus and nutrients from the SB.I was able to keep mine for many years using this method.
