wats a good skimmer for 10 g?

i am looking for a decent protein skimmer for a 10 gallon tank that is a reasonable price... a guy at the lfs wanted to sell me one for 75 that went up 2 100 gallons... this a deal? looks lightly used?

yeah, not bad (look online for used prices same model and compare) but a skimmer is a skimmer as long as it fits and works.

I've never put a skimmer on anything smaller than a 25 gallon tank. Just no need. My 10 gallon has a HOB bio wheel filter and it is the cleanest tank in the house. Save your money.

Re: wats a good skimmer for 10 g?

I ran a DIY skimmer on my 15g system and would definitively recomend a skimmer. All those ppl who say they never ran a skimmer on a nano, theres no need. Well who are they to say you shouldn't have one if they don't see the contrast?
Sorry Warren, but I really feel a nano is fit for a skimmer, although it can be kept with out one if your strict.

Oh and Warren, A bio wheel filter on a SW? tsk tsk. How are your nitrAtes?

Bio wheels actually work excellent on smaller tanks. With the relatively small amount of live rock and live sand a bio wheel can provide an excellent area to culture more bio bacteria. With the proper changing of pads and cleaning of pads they, in some cases, can be better than a skimmer on smaller tanks. It is very difficult to find a decent skimmer for a nano that is not way over sized. If you have a skimmer that is way over skimming you may not be able to keep zoas and softies as they thrive off the "dirtier" water that the bio wheel will allow. I would only recommend a skimmer on a nano if you plan on SPS as they are really the only things that need it as long as you moderate your feeding and dont overstock the tank.

Just my 2 cents

Matt

Matt, I totally agree with you on the not over stocking issue.

Re: wats a good skimmer for 10 g?

I have a 24 gallon aquapod with no skimmer (i want one though) and i have never had a problem with water quality. I keep sps lps zoes shrooms xenia. the whole lot without a problem. I currently have 2 ocellaris clowns a six line wrasse and a royal gramma and my nitrates never EVER get above 10ppm ( i do a WC once a month) its more water but i say try it without then if things are rough invest then you can vouch for the difference of skimmer vs. no skimmer in nanos.

Nitrates = 5ppm

The 55 runs at 20 - 30

Both tanks are fed everyday with my blender mix. Even though my girl is heavy handed with the food I still cant believe how well the 10 gallon does. I easily have way more coralline growth in the 10 gallon compared to the growth rate of the 55. All my 10 gallons in the past have had bio wheels and they have all run extremely well without skimmers. Go figure!

Guess I can't be such a critic anymore!

Re: wats a good skimmer for 10 g?

Also, with such small volumes of tank water, water changes are very easy to do and are very inexpensive as well. That's what keeps the nano's looking their best in my opinion.

just my $.02
