Re: Socks

Sponge filters are great places for 'bad' bacteria to colonize.

Re: Socks

I use a sock on the return into the sump. I exchange it weekly with a clean one. I shake out the dirty sock (both sides) into a bucket save the amphods which I put back into the tank. Some make it to the bottom and rock but many get eaten as snacks on the way down.

I use a sponge on my skimmer exit and I rinse this out bi-weekly in my water change waste water then return it to service.

I use them. I don't always recommend them though.
If you choose to use a sock buy several so you can change them at least once or twice a week. And yes they will catch anything above the rated micron size of the bag. In my past tanks it wasn't much of an issue.
The reason sponge filters AND socks aren't recommended is because once stuff collects in there and decomposes it is a great place for aerobic bacteria to colonize and release nitrates.
Socks are easy enough to change frequently that this is not an issue. I kept several on hand, swap em out during the week when they start looking brown and at the end of the week wash all of them in bleach and water.

I agree, this is why I choose not to wear socks..I am more of a sandel person. Even in winter, I wish I didn't have to wear tennis shoes/full shoes.

yeah, but without socks you have dirty feet. I see the symptoms here all the time at the beach. People going sockless and at the end off the day they have sand, pods and dirt on the bottom.
Of course I would never recommend socks and sandals, then you get dirty socks.

Re: Socks

What is the best point in a tank to have a sock filter?

Pre-refugium, post refugium?

I'm thinking along the line of best pod population.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

I run Bare bottom tanks with good flow and turbulence along the bottom to kick up any detritus. The sock allows me to filter out and physically remove uneaten food, fish and crab poop and other stuff from my tank before it breaks down much. this helps with the maintenance of a lower nutrient tank.
If you take a look at most of your "pods" they tend to be benthic critters crawling on your rock, not swimming in the water. I don't think the filter removes a ton of them. I've yet to see any negative affects in a tank that has a "low pod population." Keep in mind removing copepods and having a tank that can't support copepods are two entirely different things.

Re: Socks

This is all part of my master plan to have a tank overflowing with pods.
I want to have a mandarin someday. Just don't want my refuge to be a waste of time.
