Any one else keep sponges?

I bought a red tree sponge about two weeks ago. I followed the instructions and never exposed it to air. It seems like it's doing fine, even growing a little bit already. Just wondering if anyone else has had success keeping sponges. I don't usually see any in other peoples tanks.

Oh also it was not attached to anything when I put it in the tank, so I piled rocks around its base. Should I glue it to a rock or will it be fine?

That algae is not growing on the sponge. I had just pulled algae off of some rocks and some got stuck on it. It's clean now, but I'm too lazy to take a new picture.

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

Yes use some super glue gel to attach it to a rock

I have some sponges including a yellow tree.
I'll post some pics later after I get home.

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

Ok, will do. Should I put glue on a rock and then put it underwater to stick the sponge to it? Just don't want to take it out of the water.

A yellow tree...that's cool! I didn't know they came in yellow.

I have a blue sponge...love it's color. It's attached to a rock. I feed it DT's phyto every other day. I love the color and shape of yours.

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

You can apply the superglue gel under water. Put a dab of it on a rock and then stick the sponge to it.

Good job of never exposing it to air too!

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

Terry: Thanks! I didn't know you could apply the superglue gel underwater. Good to know. That'll make things a lot easier.

Jen: Thanks! I was thinking of getting a blue sponge. They're so pretty! I've been feeding my corals marine snow and let it circulate through the whole tank. Think that's enough for the sponge? I've only fed phyto a couple of times and my snails have spawned twice lately (free food!), so it's gotten a little extra.

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

I had an orange tree sponge for about 9 months. It was doing great and growing. Then one day for no reason I could discover the outside slowly deteriorated until we had to remove it.

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

Im afraid I dont have any tricks.
I try to keep them out of too much light as I have 250w MH. That is hard to do with the tree sponge. So I keep him at the end of the tank

Same here. They apparently don't have a good survival rate in our closed systems.

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

They are also susceptible to algae. Keep an eye on them and make sure they have good flow.
I kept a blue sponge for 4 or 5 yrs, it didn't make it through the transfer to the 120. That was a sad day, I loved it, it was beautiful.

Re: Any one else keep sponges?

Well so far no algae is growing on it. And algae was growing EVERYWHERE in my tank! But that problem is under control now. I keep it in the back behind rocks, so it doesn't get full light. And it gets a good amount of flow. Hopefully it will survive!

Does anyone have pictures of their blue sponges? I'd like to see them!
