Whats so great about ASM G4?

Maybe you guys can help me out

I keep looking at photos of that skimmer
maybe im wrong
Isnt it just a pump, like mag5 and a venturi, shotting water and air into a cylinder?

I want to make one but I dunno if thats all theres to it or am I missing something here?

that is basically what every skimmer is... some use venturi...others a neddle or mesh wheel.

hey man, if you figure that out, let us all know. IMO, the cost of skimmers is the #1 rip-off in this hobby. To make matters worse, everyone clamors about how such and such a skimmer is so good or better than the others, when really all decent skimmers are pretty damn similar.

Basically we all buy them because the acrylic is sooo expensive, ive come across some decent plans for DIY but the materials cost almost as much as buying a skimmer so why the hassle.

I don't know how they work but I know they work very well. I havce two ASM G series skimmers and can't imagine replacing them with anything else. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

so is there really just a pump attached to a cylinder, or is there something else I cannot see in pix?

yes,its basically a pump attached to a cylinder, but theres a lot more going on than that,and everything has to jive to get the best performance. it is quite possible to diy your own skimmer but do yourself and your wallet a huge favor and research them thoroughly. that being said i have a modded G2 on a 135 and love it.

For me it's in the ease of "tuning"... the design where you can easily tune the thing so you get a nice dry skim is where the $ should be spent. I also saw ones where there's a drain to a collection bucket, you have to be careful that these are controlled so that you don't dump your whole tank when the skimmer goes wonky.

I have Euro-reef where it took a bit of tweaking to get right. There's a overflow tube that controls water height in the chamber and another contolling the air into the venturi (which also affects the water height)... It was a pain to figure out how best to tweak it (instructions are useless at best), but it works pretty good now...
