Ultimatly, lighting always depends on what you want to keep.

If you want to keep SPS and clams, then I say go with metal halides, if you just want softies and LPS, then I say go with VHOs or power compacts.

Each type of lighting has its benefits and weaknesses and it ultimatly depends on what you want to keep, how much money you want to spend, and other concerns such as heat, evaporation, etc...

So to start, do you know what oyu want to keep?

Take er easy

250 watt mh would be perfect over a 25 gallon tank.

The light you need depends on the corals you are keeping. What are you keeping?

Metal Halides over a 25 gallon tank in Chula Vista!!
Dont worry about getting a float valve bacause you are going to evaporate water as fast as your RO unit can make it.
But in all seriousness I think you will do just fine with some PC bulbs. Check out this link http://www.cs.clemson.edu/~malloy/pe...tank/tank.html
