| Scopas Tang | green water? I recently set up a 55 gallon tank with 200 wats pc lighting a simple hob filter 2 power heads. the temp is around 82. The water recently started turning dark green. I got the water from the great sout bay. It is clean that is not my question. my question is "is this now green water" that people use for feeding there tanks?

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: green water? I don't know if it is the exact type of algae we 'feed' out tanks or not. But you definately have yourself a waterborne algae bloom. A UV sterilizer will kill the algae or a diatom filter will help remove the algae. Try large water changes using ro/di and a commercial salt mix.

| Neon dottyback | Re: green water? Hey Jnohs, Welcome from a fellow Long Islander! I used to get all my NSW from the construction dock right inside Jones Inlet. Where were you getting your water from in GBS? The reason I stopped doing this recently was ONLY because I realized that with winter came snow, and with snow came road salt, and that can run-off into our bays, inlets...in other words, I felt it was "time" to give in and go the artificial route. I admit that I did the NSW thing for almost a year with NO ill effects WHATSOEVER despite MUCH MUCH naysaying from a lot of folks (who are only being cautious)... Maybe you harvested your water too close to an area of runoff? DO you have a diatom filter? That should get rid of the green stuff. |
