Oysters in a reef??

Oysters in reef tank?

What do you guys think about Oysters as filter assistance?
Anyone have any experience with these in your reef environment?

Re: Oysters in a reef??

I wouldn't recommend it. If it were a staple in the hobby, everyone would sell them. I think that you would find it difficult to keep them alive. The flame scallop is also a filter feeder and few hobbiests have any success in keeping them alive very long. I know that I wouldn't buy them at any price.

Re: Oysters in a reef??

If they are coming from coastal NC, then I would bet they are a temperate water species and will not survive long term at reef temperatures. I know the ad says they can tolerate up to 90 degrees, but I can tell you that most things collected on the atlantic coast from the Carolinas north are for the most temperate animals and don't live long at higher temps.

Re: Oysters in a reef??

The increased temps ALSO increase their metabolism and it's "thought" hampers other parts of their biological functions (immune system ext). Yeah they will "survive" in the reef but for how long? We aren't here to make them survive but THRIVE!!! Also take into account how they would "pollute" your tank if they expired suddenly and you didn't get them removed from the tank. Too much of a gamble

Re: Oysters in a reef??

i have like an oyster clam thing in my tank.

he came in covered in zoos, and all the zoos got eaten, so he fell to the DSB, and has moved around the tank a few times, but now has stuck himself to a piece of LR.

he just chills i guess

Re: Oysters in a reef??

Cool... Thanks for the input, I think I'll pass on that idea then... Its probably someone walking the NC beach collecting stuff to sell on eBay I guess.

If I heard success stories I might consider getting a few, but it dosent seem like thats the case here...

Have fun watching the Super Bowl!

Re: Oysters in a reef??

I have a dozen top neck clams in my 14 biocube. All are doing well so far 8 months. I can see there feeding tubes and when i tap on the tank all of a sudden 12 puffs of sand shoot out the sand. I got them right from a local fish market. 7 bucks. I live in ny and the clam bussiness is actually a big bussiness. long island has the great south bay witch is aproximatly 1 mile wide by 40 miles and geanerally only 4 feet deep . any way the water here in the summer gets up to 77

Re: Oysters in a reef??

I had an oyster in my 90 gallon from Long Island Sound. I found it, put it in my tank and it lived for a year until i sold off my stuff. I bet it is still in that tank at the lfs where i left all my corals.
